Tony Stewart flings his helmet at Matt Kenseth in the best NASCAR video of the year

-Follow Jay Busbee on Twitter at @JayBusbee.-

Short-track racing makes a man a mite feisty. Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth were battling for the lead when both turned downward and hit the wall, effectively ending both their chances at a win. Stewart's car was the more damaged, and as Kenseth passed him on pit road, Stewart fired a low strike right at Kenseth's hood. Hop-step, two hands ... that was Olympic-quality helmet tossing, friends.

Interviewed as his car was under repair, Stewart made no attempt to hide his disgust with Kenseth. "I'm going to run over him every chance I get for the rest of the year," he said of Kenseth. And when informed that he'd get his helmet back, he shot back, "I don't give a crap. Hell with the helmet."

NASCAR has a fine tradition of drivers throwing helmets: Robby Gordon slung one at Michael Waltrip in New Hampshire in 2005. Elliott Sadler fired his helmet at Ryan Newman at Charlotte in 2002. And Dale Jarrett lobbed his helmet right at Bobby Hillin Jr. at Bristol back in 1993.

NASCAR, baby. NASCAR.

Mello Yello to replace Full Throttle as NHRA title sponsor in 2013

It's Kyle Petty flashback time!

Mello Yello, most known in racing circles for its sponsorship of Petty in the then Winston Cup Series in the early 1990s, is returning to racing as the title sponsor of the NHRA pro series in 2013, replacing Full Throttle energy drink.

Both Mello Yello and Full Throttle are owned by Coca-Cola, and while the latter's name was particularly apt for a racing sponsorship, the decision was made to transition toe sponsorship to a different product. Coca-Cola also extended its agreement as title sponsor of the series through 2018.

"The Coca-Cola Company has been a cornerstone of the sport since 2002, and this extension ensures our partnership will continue through at least 2018," NHRA President Tom Compton said in a statement. "Over the past 11 years working with The Coca-Cola Company and the bottlers, we have developed a deep professional and personal relationship. Transitioning to a brand as powerful as Mello Yello is exciting on a number of fronts, and the vision the brand team and the bottlers have shared with us regarding their plans to leverage this sponsorship will provide an extended reach nationwide for the sport of NHRA Drag Racing."

The announcement was made in Indianapolis, site of the traditional Labor Day Weekend U.S. Nationals and included the announcement of the series' 2013 schedule.

2012 Nrburgring WSBK: Saturday Qualifying Round Up

The Nürburgring in Germany is an iconic location. The famous 13-mile Nordschleife attached to the GP track is a mecca for motorsports fanatics wanting to test their bravery and car factories wanting to test their latest models. The GP-Strecke is the GP track that the Superbikes race at. It was completed in 1984 and is used for Formula 1, DTM, World Superbikes and others. It was built on the site of the old Sudschleife, the south ring to the Nordschleife's north ring, and connects to the larger track at the tight Coca Cola curve that leads on to the start/finish straight. The first corner is a bowl-shaped hairpin, a scene of many comings together in the past, and the rest of the track is comprised of many different corners and few straights, so don't expect high-gearing slipstreaming to feature here.

Jeff Gordon was really unhappy with Dale Earnhardt Jr. in Michigan

Everything was going so well for Jeff Gordon. He'd been charging forward for the last few months, working his way up the standings from joke to afterthought to respectable competitor to wild-card holder. Then came last week and a spin at oily Watkins Glen, and then Sunday at Michigan, when absolutely nothing went right.

As you can hear in the video above, Gordon was furious at Dale Earnhardt Jr. for hard racing ... much to Earnhardt's surprise. The issue, apparently, was how Earnhardt was handling restarts:

[Related: Danica Patrick hits a shoe while leading Montreal Nationwide race]

"He took me four-wide [on the restart] and that wasn't that big of a deal, but then he slid up in front of me off of Turn 2, and I had to check up or I would have wrecked all of us," Gordon said afterward. "So, I just didn't think that it was the smartest thing to do, especially as teammates. But, he chose to do it and that's fine. It all worked out. I don't care who I'm racing out there; I'm going to show my displeasure if I'm not happy about something. But that one was pretty close; but no big deal. I'm glad to see he's running good. Those guys have really got their car dialed-in here at Michigan this year."

Quality response by Gordon, especially considering he was off the track soon afterward for unrelated engine issues, and a smart one for the long term. Chances are this "feud" is already over and done with, but still ... makes for some good radio, yes?
