2012 Sepang 2 MotoGP Test Day 3 Round Up: Of Mercury And Sisyphus, Or Speed And Hard Labor
At last a full day of testing: though Thursday started out overcast, the rain that threatened through the final day of the Sepang MotoGP test never really came in earnest, with only a few drops of rain keeping the riders off the track for an hour or so in the afternoon. After two days which were largely lost to the weather, worked was stepped up to an almost frantic pace to make up for lost time.
The name of the fastest rider of the day was as unsurprising as the direction the sun rose in the morning. Casey Stoner has established himself as the man to beat, realistically from the moment he left Ducati to join Honda. After yesterday's hiatus - forced on the Honda riders by HRC, after an engine warning light on Dani Pedrosa's RC213V saw the bikes confined to their garages as a precautionary measure - Stoner was back in charge, topping the timesheets comfortably once again.

Repsol Press Release: Marc Marquez Completes Testing at Albacete
Marc Marquez has completed two full days of testing on his Catalunya Caixa Suter Moto2 machine, the first full session of testing since the Spaniard suffered an injury to his right eye at Sepang back in October 2011. After being given the all clear by the doctors to start riding a Moto2 machine again, Marquez took a preliminary run out at Alcarras earlier this week to test his ability to ride, completing just 8 laps, before scheduling two days of testing at the Albacete circuit, to carry out a thorough test of his fitness to ride without suffering the double vision which had plagued him earlier.
The test was shrouded in secrecy, with even normally well-informed sources keeping quiet on progress at the test, but knowing the massive media interest in the progress Marquez is making - especially in his native Spain - the Repsol Media service issued the following press release and video of Marquez after the test:

Dale Earnhardt Jr., Mark Martin have words, trade paint
For about the first 71 laps, Las Vegas was one hell of a race for Dale Earnhardt Jr., since he led 70 of them. In a single afternoon, he totaled more laps led than he did in all of 2011.
But then a four-tire stop when many others took just two buried him back in the pack, and he was never able to get back to the lead. He cited a few problems, like tight handling, but overall just couldn't transition from running in clean air to running in traffic.
Still, there was one particular low point, when he rammed hard into former teammate Mark Martin, who proceeded to give him a little guff right back. To hear Junior tell it, though, respect for one's elders goes only so far.
"To me, personally, there is an unwritten etiquette ... when the guy is running the top," Earnhardt said. "I'm coming ten miles an hour faster off the top of the race track, you stay low. Don't knock a half second off my lap time being a jerk about it. Stay low. You are going to get it in the next corner and the position is going to be yours. Don't pull up in front of somebody when they are going to come off the corner ten miles an hour faster."
Martin, alas, did not offer any reply; his only postrace quotes both live and on Twitter were of the "rough day, should've been better" variety. Martin would end up 18th on the afternoon, dropping him four spots to 10th in the standings.
"I didn't really mean to put him in the wall, but from the cosmetic standpoint it didn't look like it hurt his car," Earnhardt said. "I was pretty frustrated at the moment before that happened, and that just kind of really sent me over the edge there. We just want to win really bad and felt like we should have finished better than we did today."
Earnhardt, for his part, now sits fourth in the standings. Now, fire away, Junior Nation and Anti-Junior Nation.
After Daytona 500 crash, Jimmie Johnson faces possibility of having negative points

Jimmie Johnson may be looking at Kevin Harvick for inspiration.
After completing 22 laps in last year's Daytona 500, Kevin Harvick's engine expired. He finished 42nd, but was in the top 10 in the points standings by the fifth race of the season en route to a third-place finish in the Chase.
On Monday night, Johnson crashed just after the 2012 Daytona 500's first lap completed. The damage was too extensive to repair. He too finished 42nd.
Harvick turned out to be a perfect case study for NASCAR's new 1-43 points system. Yes, a finish near the bottom of the standings can be crippling, especially as the season winds down. But he proved that it's not a disaster or cause for alarm with 35 races to go.

Now, Johnson is in the same situation, but with added layer of intrigue: a potential points penalty.
Before the first practice session of the season for the Daytona 500, the C-posts from Johnson's car were confiscated by NASCAR for modifications that were "too far out of tolerance to fix," according to Sprint Cup Series director of competition John Darby.
The following day, NASCAR president Mike Helton said that penalization for Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus and the rest of the No. 48 team was a "high likelihood." (NASCAR's penalty decision is expected to be announced Tuesday or Wednesday.)
Last fall at Talladega, the Michael Waltrip Racing teams were each penalized 25 points and $50,000 for illegal windshield modifications that were discovered before practice for the event began. The crew chiefs were also suspended for four weeks.
After Helton's comments, Johnson's owner, Rick Hendrick, said that he would appeal any penalty.
"Maybe you can put it together," Hendrick said when asked if the confiscation could have something to do with comments that Knaus made atprior to lastfall's Talladega race, when scanners captured him telling Johnson to crack the back of the car during a postrace celebration if he won.

If 25 points is the penalty for the No. 48 team, that would mean that Johnson would enter next week's race at Phoenix with -23 points instead of 2. That wouldn't be the first time in recent memory that a NASCAR driver has entered the second week of the season with negative points ? and it also involved MWR.
In 2007, Waltrip's teams were found to have had jet fuel in the intake manifolds. In addition to indefinite suspensions for his crew chief and competition director and a $100,000 fine, Waltrip was penalized 100 points and left Daytona 27 points in the red. After missing the next 11 races of the season, Waltrip finally moved into the black at Dover.
While Johnson won't have to worry about missing races anytime soon thanks to the top-35 rule that guarantees his qualifying spot for the next four races (and most likely the rest of the season), it's not totally out of the realm of possibility that he'll leave Phoenix with negative points too. Any finish of 22nd or worse means that Johnson is still in the red heading into Las Vegas.
"I'm OK," Johnson said after his crash. "I'm just really bummed out for this whole Lowe's team. To work as hard as everyone did at Hendrick Motorsports to get this Lowe's Chevrolet and to have it barely complete two-and-a-half miles of green flag racing is pretty sad. Disappointed, but nothing I can do about it now. We'll just go on and go to Phoenix and set our marks on winning that race."

Anchor punished for implied insult towards Danica Patrick
San Diego sportscaster Ross Shimabuku has been suspended for a week without pay for remarks made about Danica Patrick before her Sprint Cup Series debut in the Daytona 500.
After playing a clip in which Patrick talks about the adjectives she's been described with throughout her racing (and advertising) career, Shimabuku said, "I've got a few words. It's starts with a 'b' and it's not beautiful."
Shimabuku subsequently apologized for the remarks on Tuesday.

This isn't the first time in February that an anchor has been suspended over comments about a high-profile athlete. ESPN anchor Max Bretos was suspended for 30 days after using the phrase "chink in his armor" in a conversation with Walt Frazer about Jeremy Lin. A similar phrase was also used in a headline on ESPN's mobile website, and the editor who wrote the headline was fired.
And while Shimabuku is at San Diego's Fox affiliate and Bretos is at ESPN, it is interesting to note the discrepancy in suspension lengths for the two anchors, especially given that Bretos' was in the course of an unscripted, on-air conversation and that Shimabuku's line was clearly premeditated. And frankly, quite stupid.
