Video: This is how difficult it can be to get a water bottle out of a car

In the early stages of Saturday's Nationwide race at Road America, Justin Allgaier's water bottle fell from its cupholder and ended up wedged underneath his pedals.

That's a dangerous situation for anyone, let alone a driver trying to navigate a four-mile road course at high speeds. But retrieving that water bottle wasn't as easy as Allgaier reaching to the floor to get it. He couldn't because he was strapped in to his seat.

So when Allgaier pitted, a crew member dove in through the passenger side window to try to get it. And even that was tough -- the pit stop took almost a minute and another crew member had to come over and take down the window net.

Talk about a pesky water bottle. However, Allgaier recovered nicely from the long pit stop and finished 10th.

Kentucky hopes new plans will mean less traffic headaches Saturday

Quick, what's the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of last year's race at Kentucky?

Unless you're a Kyle Busch fan, it's probably not about the race winner. Or David Reutimann, who went from Lucky Dog to a second place finish in the final 58 laps.

It was the traffic getting to the race.

Kentucky Speedway said it sold 107,000 tickets for its inaugural event. However, many of those that had tickets didn't even get to the track. And those that did get to the track spent hours upon hours in that traffic and/or ended up parking a long way away from the track. (The track offered a ticket exchange program for those that didn't make it.)

Last week, the Kentucky State Police unveiled a new plan to help avoid last year's issues, and Kentucky State Police Captain Dean Hayes said he guaranteed that traffic would be better. (However, could it really have been much worse?)

From KYPost.com:

Over $13.5 million has been spent to upgrade the infrastructure around the facility to get people in and out as quickly as possible.

The speedway's share was $10 million to add 20,000 new parking spaces across Kentucky Route 35 from the track. That brings the total number of available spaces to 35,800.

Kentucky invested $3.5 million by adding a lane to the exit ramp from Southbound I-71 to Route 35, widening Route 35 to seven lanes and building a pedestrian tunnel under Route 35 connecting the new parking areas to the track.

A smaller crowd than last year may help as well. The track said that while 8,000 people have taken advantage of the ticket exchange, it had sold less than 100,000 tickets for Saturday night's race.

And while getting to the race may be easier, there may be some unhappy folks after the race. All parking lots will be held for 30 minutes so that pedestrians can get to their cars and the infield parking lots will be held for 90 minutes.

Video: Watch a 17bhp Renault Twizy drift

When one thinks of a drift car, an electric-powered urban transport vehicle definitely doesn?t fit the bill. In an ideal world, one would want a rear-wheel drive car powered by a front-mounted engine producing as little as 200HP like the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. That being said, the Renault Twizy does have at least one of those aspects with it being rear-wheel drive.

It?s almost hard to believe just how little power the Twizy has when one really thinks about it. Any car below 200 or even 150HP is often viewed as underpowered in today?s modern world of automobiles, but the Twizy only pumps out 17 horsepower from its tiny electric motor which also produces 70Nm of torque which can help propel it to 75 km/h.

However, Autocar set out to find out if the tiny 1+1 vehicle could drift when thrown around a drifting circle covered in water, and what would you know, the car turned out to be quite the drift machine.

However, due to the fact that the Twizy is almost laughably underpowered, it genuinely seems like the Twizy is drifting in slow motion and the presenter goes onto reveal that under these conditions, its battery would only last 10 minutes.

Now we?re sure no one out there is going to purchase a Twizy for its drifting capabilities, but it?s definitely interesting to know that almost any car out there can drift.

Video: Watch a 17bhp Renault Twizy drift originally appeared on topspeed.com on Saturday, 30 June 2012 02:00 EST.

Danica Patrick spun by Jacques Villeneuve on final lap at Road America

Danica Patrick was heading to tie her career-best NASCAR finish during Saturday's Nationwide Series race at Road America when she was spun on the final lap by Jacques Villeneuve in Turn 5 of the four-mile Wisconsin road course.

Patrick had just gotten by Max Papis for fourth and was ahead of Villeneuve as the two headed toward Turn 5. Villeneuve, a former Formula 1 champion, followed Patrick on the inside, but as he tried to move around Papis, he got into Patrick's rear bumper and turned her around.

"Look, I'm going to start off with a positive. I ran top five all day. I took the lead for a brief moment until I learned my lesson down into Turn 5 when you try to get a little bit more out of the brake zone," Patrick said. "So, that's the bummer is that we weren't able to finish that off and finish off with a top five like I feel that we all deserved. ... And it just would have been good to get a good result ?people sort of say I don't get good results but today I ran well and we just can't ? I feel like lately we've been running much better but we just haven't sort of finished the deal and gotten the results."

And about the incident with Villeneuve?

"I don't know, you all can make a decision for yourself about what you think happened there," Patrick said with a concluding eye roll.

Villeneuve finished fourth. Patrick was able to get out out of the gravel trap to finish 12th.

Villeneuve said that Papis pushed him into the dirt while he was under braking and when he got his left side tires back on the track he wasn't able to gain traction before he hit Patrick.

"We had nothing to do together. When I was behind Danica and Papis was on the outside, maybe he didn't know I was there, but down the straight he pushed me in the grass just where we hit he brakes," Villeneuve said. "So when I jumped in the brakes I was in the grass because of that, I wasn't right next to him so no idea. Couldn't slow down after that."

While Villeneuve did get off course ?the dust cloud behind his car doesn't dispute that ? it is interesting to note that while under braking after he got back on the track fully, the interval between his car and Patrick's was fairly constant until Patrick was in the corner. That's when it closed rapidly. (It's also worth noting that in eight Nationwide Series races, Villeneuve has become widely known for his propensity to make contact with others.)

During her tenure in the Izod IndyCar Series before she made the full-time move to NASCAR in 2012, Patrick wasn't known for her road racing prowess ?just one of her seven podium finishes came on a road or street course. And in her first 38 NASCAR starts, her lone top five was last year at Las Vegas when she finished fourth thanks to fuel mileage.

Saturday was Patrick's second start on a road course in the Nationwide Series and after qualifying in the top 10, she was near the front all day. Her performance, and yes, her brief lead, weren't a fluke. She hung consistently with the leaders and eventual winner Nelson Piquet Jr. for most of the race, and traded fourth with Papis, a noted road course racer, multiple times over the last 10 laps.

But like at Michigan last week, where Patrick ran in the top 10 before crashing late, the results didn't match the performance. It's not pandering to say she is improving; while a win isn't immediately around the corner ?that would be a stretch ?it won't be much longer before her improvement is noted in the final results and she strings together some top 10s.

Power Rankings: You know who?s No. 1

The race is done, and that means it's time for Power Rankings. Each week throughout the season, we'll size up who's rising and who's falling, based on current standings, behind-the-scenes changes, expected staying power, recent history and general gut feelings. It is not scientific, nor is it meant to be. And remember, whoever your favorite driver is, we're biased against him and like someone else better. We continue with a guy who likes his perch...

1. Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Well, here we are. Junior got his win. And, yes, the sun still rose in the east on Monday morning. Will this solve all of NASCAR's woes? Of course not. But it does mean we'll have to come up with a new storyline each week. Too bad. We'll miss you, "Can Junior win this week?" article. Last week: 3.

2. Matt Kenseth: Get this: Kenseth has eight top-5s and 11 top-10s in 15 races. He's also placed in the top 10 in 10 of the last 11 races. (That 11th? He placed 11th. Symmetry!) In other words, Kenseth is doing exactly what Carl Edwards did last year with a consistent run of finishes. But did he learn that one win isn't enough? Last week: 2.

3. Jimmie Johnson: You know that Junior Nation was absolutely terrified at the thought of Jimmie Johnson coming from behind Earnhardt as the laps wound down. Sure, Jimmie is as sentimental as anyone, but would he lay back just to let Junior win? We'll never know, fortunately for the 88 crowd. Last week: 1.

4. Greg Biffle: Another strong outing from the Biff, who was one of the faster cars all week at Michigan. The guy is serious, folks, and we're ready to declare him a legit championship contender. Which means he'll now go on a run of five straight 30th-place finishes. Sorry, man. Last week: 5.

5. Tony Stewart: Tony, we know your kneejerk reaction is to disagree with whatever the prevailing narrative is, but did you really need to grump about Junior winning a race with your "it isn't a national holiday" line? (Plus, it actually was a national holiday. Father's Day.) Anyway, ease up. It's good news for everybody. Last week: 7.

6. Kevin Harvick: Another good weekend for Harvick, the automotive if not literal heir to Dale Earnhardt Sr. Which allows me to vent about the goofiest element of Junior's win: the whole "he won on Father's Day in a black car" nonsense, like that was supposed to mean something. Look, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm fairly sure that almost all the other NASCAR drivers have fathers, too. And how can Junior outrun his father's shadow if everyone keeps draping it over him?. Last week: 8.

7. Martin Truex Jr.: Hey, guess who's now got the most famous super-long losing streak in NASCAR? Truex's dates back to 2007, which means it always was longer than Junior's, but now? Now the impending free agent has nowhere else to hide. Last week: 9.

8. Clint Bowyer: Rawhide has been quietly putting together some quality races over the last few weeks. He's in ninth place, with a bit of distance between himself and Brad Keselowski in 10th. He'll need to win a race to make things easier; it's about to get very crowded at the low end of the Chase picture. Last week: 12.

9. Kasey Kahne. Another rough go for Kahne, who seems back to his low-finishing (or is it high-finishing? how about bad-finishing) ways. With the logjam of one-win cats in the teens, standings-wise, Kahne will need another victory to distinguish himself. Good thing he's won at Sonoma before. Last week: 6.

10. Denny Hamlin: Another rough afternoon for Denny, but oh, that was a fiendish fire he suffered. All three Joe Gibbs Racing cars flamed out, literally or metaphorically, in Michigan. Is it time to panic at Gibbs? Probably not, but time to be a tiny bit concerned, definitely. Last week: 4.

11. Marcos Ambrose: Ambrose is one of those guys who always seems right on the very edge of breaking through big, and you wonder exactly how much of that is talent and how much is based on the cars he's driving. Of course, he keeps running like he has lately and he'll have virtually his pick of teams when his contract's up. Last week: NR.

12. Jeff Gordon: Hey, look who's starting to put together some decent runs! Of course, Gordon is ranked 20th in the standings, so he's not exactly able to coast now. Can he make the wild card? Sure, but it'll take two wins in the last 11 races, minimum. That's a tall order. Last week: 12.

Dropping out of the rankings: Joey Logano, Kyle Busch. Tough week for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Lucky Dog: Juan Pablo Montoya. Dude finished 8th, matching his best run of the season. And in honor of that, we won't even mention the jet dryer. Whoops.

DNF: Kyle Busch. Three bad engines, three weeks in a row? Sounds like Kyle Busch has made an enemy somewhere. Could it be ... Junior? (Probably not. But that'd be a great story, wouldn't it?)

2012 Silverstone Moto2 Race Report: Don't Get Mad, Get Even

Pol Espargaró came back from darkness into the winner’s spotlight in a matter of days, thanks to his lonely and extraordinary Moto2 win at Silverstone. «Smart» Pol –do not confuse with Ducati rider Paul Smart- left Barcelona injured, with no points and witnessing how arch rival Marc Márquez was leaving with the same 16 points that Pol was fighting for when he crashed at Montmeló.

Espargaro may not be the most technical rider on the grid, neither does he speak the best English. However, you can be sure he has the strongest spirit among riders in the intermediate class. It would have been natural to be furious after being taken out by Marquez in Barcelona. But Espargaró was very well advised by HP Tuenti team Boss Sito Pons and chose the opposite and toughest way of overcoming his setback. Just dedicating a few nice words to his Catalunya Caixa rival and then focusing on proving at Silverstone he is as quick as the fastest rider on the track. Watching Espargaró in the last few seasons brings to my mind that old racing cliché: You can't teach a slow rider to produce a talent he does not have, but fortunately you can teach a skilled rider to be smarter or avoid mistakes. That’s what Espargaró and the HP Tuenti team have achieved this season.
