Valencia MotoGP Test Preview: Rossi, Marquez, Ducati, And The Future

The sense of expectation in the air at Valencia is wound so tight it hums. Tomorrow morning, some time after 10am, some of that expectation will start to dissipate as we get the first glimpses of answers that have preoccupied MotoGP fans for the past few months.

Two things we hope to see: a glimpse of the past and a glimpse of the future. After two long, hard years, the army of Valentino Rossi fans will be hoping to see something they haven't since 2010, or maybe even 2009: a flowing, comfortable, aggressive Valentino Rossi at one with the machine underneath. That was something he never showed while riding the Ducati, the figure in the Rossi replica helmet sitting on the Ducati always looking more like a club racer had sneaked into the back of the Ducati garage to take the bike out for a spin, terrifying himself in the process. Rossi looked stiff, awkward, uncomfortable, his back arched like a cat negotiating a dog-infested yard.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. to take tests on Monday and Tuesday to determine Martinsville status

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. is scheduled to undergo tests, both inside the car and out of it, on Monday and Tuesday to determine his availability for Sunday's Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville.

Junior has missed the previous two Sprint Cup Series races after being diagnosed with a concussion after a last lap pileup at Talladega two weeks ago. At the time, it was also determined that he had suffered a previously undiagnosed concussion at the end of August at Kansas Speedway when he crashed during a Goodyear tire test.

On Sunday, team owner Rick Hendrick originally said before the race that Junior had already been cleared to race at Martinsville. However, in a mid-race press conference on Sunday, Hendrick clarified his remarks, and said that Junior still needed to pass a test in the car at Gresham Motorsports Park on Monday, and would see neurosurgeon Dr. Jerry Petty at Petty's office on Tuesday.

[Also: Retaliation attempt fails for Danica Patrick (Video)]

"However, I didn't know until (Hendrick Motorsports PR Director Jesse Essex) informed me that I had gotten ahead of myself and that there is a closed test on Monday that Dr. Petty will attend," Hendrick said. "Dale will be back in the car (for that test) and he'll make the decision with a final test on Tuesday. So, we don't foresee any problems but I didn't read my emails this morning and I kind of got ahead of myself. I talked to the doctor myself and everything went good in Pittsburgh and Dr. petty felt real good about it. And I did know that they were going to shake down a car, but I didn't know that the doctor was going and that he would actually be evaluating him Tuesday. I apologize for that. The test (Tuesday) is in (Dr. Petty's) office. The test Monday is in the car."

Junior saw concussion specialists last week in Pittsburgh, and Hendrick said he would be shocked if Junior wasn't cleared for Martinsville.

"I will be shocked if he's not in the car. Everything looks good. His attitude and the way he feels, he's had no headaches since Thursday or Friday of Charlotte and the tests have gone real well. I think Dr. Petty is just being super-cautious and I applaud him for that," Hendrick said.

Ducati today confirmed that they have signed an agreement the Francis Batta for the Belgian to run their World Superbike team for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. The announcement had been expected for some time, as Batta had been linked to the deal almost immediately after the shock announcement that talks between Althea and Ducati had collapsed.

The team will be contesting the 2013 World Superbike Championship with the Ducati 1199 Panigale. Carlos Checa and Ayrton Badovini have signed up for the team, and will ride the Panigale in Alstare colors next season.

Chase Power Rankings: It ends here!

The penultimate race of the Chase is over, and that means it's time for Power Rankings! But we're doing things a little differently now that we're in the postseason. It's all-Chasers, all the time. Good job, good effort for those of you that didn't make it, but we've got bigger fish to focus on. We'll be judging who's running well, considering not just finishing position but quality of run, expected potential, and general gut feelings. As always, we hate your guy and are biased against him. Now, enjoy.

1. Brad Keselowski. Man, what a turn of events for @Kes. Eighteen months ago, he was Kurt Busch's barely-known teammate, a guy more famous for who he wrecked than how he drove. Now? Amazing run to the very brink of a championship. He's got work to do, but not nearly as much as he might have. Last week: 2.

2. Jimmie Johnson. And what a turn of events for Vader. Last week, there wasn't a NASCAR fan alive who seriously thought Johnson wouldn't be gearing up for his sixth championship. Now? Well, we fully expect Johnson to make a race out of this, but it's going to be a huge hill to climb. Keselowski isn't going away. Last week: 1.

3. Clint Bowyer. A shame Jeff Gordon's temporary lunacy took out Bowyer, but it doesn't detract from what's been an outstanding season for ol' Rawhide. Plenty of people thought he was taking a huge leap downward by going from RCR to Waltrip, but as it turned out, the reverse was true. Bowyer brought home three wins and, along with Martin Truex Jr., raised MWR to respectability. Last week: 3.

4. Kasey Kahne. I had a radio host ask me this week if Kahne's final initiation into Hendrick would be to take out Keselowski early in the race. That'd be awesome, wouldn't it? Like Sons of Anarchy with twice as many wheels. Anyway, this year is a testament to Kahne's persistence; after his horrendous start, everyone had written him off, but he fought his way into the Chase and a probable top-5 season finish. That ain't bad for a start. Last week: 4.

5. Denny Hamlin. Five wins and one spectacularly ill-timed mechanical failure characterized the season for Hamlin. He's still looking for that elusive championship, but if he can carry the momentum he had for all but one of the races this year, he'll be someone to watch next year. Last week: 6.

6. Matt Kenseth. One last run for Roush Fenway, closing off a spectacular career there. It's been a strong year for Kenseth, though it had his traditional start-fast-and-then-slide run. Will Joe Gibbs Racing reverse that trend? Last week: 5.

7. Greg Biffle. Tough Chase for Biffle, but the regular season should demonstrate to everyone else that he belongs at the top of the rankings. Also, he continues his decade-long trend of winning two races every even-numbered year. Last week: 10.

8. Kevin Harvick. Nice job of salvaging the season with a victory at Phoenix, Happy! It was a forgettable 2012 on the track, but Harvick now heads into one of those strange lame-duck seasons. Good luck, everybody. Last week: 12.

9. Jeff Gordon. Like Bowyer, it's a shame that l'affaire Bowyer will define his season. He put on one of the better runs of sustained excellence in the late summer to get into the Chase, only to see it all blow up in Chicago. Last week: 7.

10. Tony Stewart. He started fast, getting three wins early, and then pretty much vanished from the conversation altogether. But as last year showed, he can come out of nowhere. Might be time to start, Tony. Last week: 9.

11. Martin Truex Jr. Tough go there for Truex in Phoenix, but it shouldn't detract from a breakout season. And he'll get that win one of these days. Last week: 8.

12. Dale Earnhardt Jr. Look, Junior effectively gets a mulligan on the Chase because of his concussion. But what's indisputable is that his regular season was something worth noting. He's got that win monkey gone, and next year, we expect greatness. Nothing less. Last week: 11.

All right, you're up. Who goes where? Go!

The Phoenix Racing No. 51 has a smiley face on the hood

With Kurt Busch in the Furniture Row Racing No. 78 for the remainder of the season, Phoenix Racing went with a new paint scheme for its first race with Busch in another car.

This week at Charlotte, the red No. 51 has a smiley face on the hood and the sides of the car. Why? We'll let car owner James Finch explain:

From Fox Sports:

"If you wreck 25 cars this year, you haven't been smiling much," Finch said. "That's 25 wrecks. I don't think the whole garage has used that much sheet metal this year ? except at Daytona and Talladega.

"Twenty-five wrecks would make anyone dizzy. For a small team to repair 25 wrecks and show up for every race on time, I think they did a great job."

Regan Smith, who was in the No. 78 until Busch replaced him this week, was scheduled to be in the car this weekend, but he was called into action over at Hendrick Motorsports after Dale Earnhardt Jr. was diagnosed with a concussion. That opened the spot for AJ Allmendinger, who is making his first start after completing NASCAR's Road to Recovery program.

Allmendinger was suspended just before the July Daytona race after failing a drug test after the Kentucky race, and was replaced in the Penske Racing No. 22 by Sam Hornish and eventually released from his contract at Penske. He qualified 38th for Saturday night's race.

Chase Power Rankings: And then there were three

The third race of the Chase is over, and that means it's time for Power Rankings! Now, enjoy.

1. Brad Keselowski: @Kes might just be the smartest driver on the circuit, or at least the best prepared. He seems to be finding angles that others miss, and he's setting himself up with plenty of cushion for the inevitable off day. Now he returns to Talladega, where he's won before ... just don't remind Carl Edwards.

2. Jimmie Johnson: Relentless. Absolutely relentless. Keeping Johnson from winning this race has to count as a major victory for all the non-Hendrick teams, but the simple truth is that if Johnson continues to post tiny-number finishes, this race is going to be over pretty darn soon.

3. Denny Hamlin: How much do you figure Hamlin learned from 2010? Hopefully plenty, because it looks like he's in this Chase to stay. And you know he'd relish a chance to take out Johnson in revenge for that Chase two years ago.

4. Clint Bowyer: It would be just perfect if Bowyer was able to sneak into the mix here after Talladega, because he above most other drivers is the epitome of what the world expects a NASCAR driver to be. He'll need lots of help that he's not currently getting to run down the Big Three, but it could still happen.

5. Kasey Kahne: Having your season depend on a dropped lug nut, as could well happen with Kahne, is like a football team losing on an offsides penalty ... it happens, but nobody feels good about it in any way. Still, Kahne has rebounded from adversity before.

6. Jeff Gordon: You've got to admire what Gordon's doing here, but when the points leaders are the ones either winning or leading the race, there's just no way for him to make up any ground. Talladega may represent his last, best chance to get back into this Chase.

7. Tony Stewart: Getting to be about time to start that all-out winning streak, Tony. Dover was another unspectacular effort from the reigning champ, and as a result, hopes for a repeat are pretty dim.

8. Dale Earnhardt Jr.: We weren't looking to write off Junior until after a poor Talladega showing, but he's one of the drivers already in danger of falling off the map. Not to say this is the most important race of the season for him, but ... it's the most important race of the season.

9. Martin Truex Jr.: We're getting perilously close to the moral-victory section of the power rankings, but Truex nonetheless did manage to wrestle a sixth-place finish out of a potentially disastrous day. He'll need more than that to scare anybody, though.

10. Kevin Harvick: One of many drivers victimized by the unfortunate Yeley caution, but let's face it, things haven't been going well for Harvick for quite some time.

11. Greg Biffle: The Biffster's rant on the radio at Dover was one of the all-time greats, a symphony of profanity and rage that I want to make into my ringtone. You can understand it, though, can't you? Three weeks ago the guy was in first place, now he's an afterthought. That kind of sucks.

12. Matt Kenseth: Of all the ways that Kenseth could have parted ways with Roush Fenway, stumbling to a last-place finish in the Chase had to be pretty low on the list. Kenseth is a prideful guy, but nothing's clicking for the 17 team right now.

Non-Chaser of the week: Kyle Busch ran exceptionally well for most of the day, but let's throw some love Mark Martin's way. The guy simply runs well no matter when he shows up. Impressive stuff, and it's too bad we won't be seeing more of him.

All right, you're up. Who should rise and who should fall? Go!

Can Keselowski maintain his advantage over Johnson and Hamlin at Martinsville?

Is Martinsville the track that's the best barometer for Brad Keselowski's Chase chances?

Yes, he's the points leader, and no one is doubting the legitimacy of Keselowski's Chase bid. But his two closest pursuers are pretty good at Martinsville.

Scratch that. Really damn good.

Jimmie Johnson is seven points back of Keselowski after drawing even with him at Kansas, damaged race car and all. In 21 Martinsville starts, Johnson has six wins, 14 top fives and 18 top 10s. Yes, he's only finished outside the top 10 three times. His average finish is an astounding 5.8, and he's led over 17 percent of the laps he's completed at Martinsville.

Denny Hamlin isn't far behind Johnson. Hamlin has four wins in 14 starts and has finished in the top 10 in all but two Martinsville races. And he's led over 16 percent of the laps he's completed. Hamlin's average finish is 6.4.

While not in the same stratosphere as Johnson and Hamlin, Keselowski hasn't been too bad at Martinsville in his five starts, with an average finish of 13.4 and two top 10s. Problem is, if the averages hold on Sunday, Johnson would be tied with Keselowski atop the standings.

That's why Sunday may be our best indicator of how the final three races will play out. If Keselowski can keep or maintain his seven point edge over Johnson, he's got the favorite status and the mental boost that comes from stagnating the five-time champion at his favorite track. If Johnson and/or Hamlin can close in or draw even with Keselowski, then we've got no favorite anymore.

Here's a look at how the other Chasers perform at Martinsville.

Jeff Gordon: Four-time is the third best driver at Martinsville, and was in position to either win or finish second to Johnson in the spring until the late race restart and ensuing chaos. Gordon's average finish is 7.1 and he has 31 top 10s in 39 starts.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Junior's never won at Martinsville but has 14 top 10s in 25 starts and has an average finish of 12.6. How crazy would it be if his first Martinsville win came after sitting out these last two races?

Tony Stewart: This just in: many of the best drivers in the sport are the best drivers at Martinsville. Smoke has three wins in 27 starts and 15 top 10s. His average finish is 13.2, and he won this race last year on the way to the title.

Clint Bowyer: Bowyer's most memorable Martinsville moment may be that aforementioned chaos in the spring, that saw him go spinning along with Gordon and Johnson. In 13 starts, Bowyer has seven top 10s and an average finish of 14.7.

Matt Kenseth: Kenseth has eight top 10s in 25 Martinsville starts, so no, this isn't Flatline's best track, even though you would think with a name like Flatline he would be better on flat tracks. (Bad joke, I know.) His average finish is 16.0.

Kevin Harvick: Cupcake's only Martinsville win came last year in the spring when he ran down and passed Junior for the win. His average finish in 22 Martinsville starts is also 16.0. Random fact: Carl Edwards' average finish is also 16.0.

Martin Truex Jr.: Here's where the separation begins, and Truex heads the list of the three Chasers who have average finishes outside the top 20. In 13 starts, Truex has two top fives and four top 10s. Average finish? 21.4

Kasey Kahne: Kahne's last (and second) top 10 at Martinsville came in the fall of 2006. Seriously. Since then, his best finish was a 14th place one in the fall race of 2010. It hasn't been pretty. His average finish in 19 races is 21.7, though he qualified on the pole for the spring. He ended up finishing that race in 28th because of a blown engine.

Greg Biffle: Bringing up the rear is the Biff, who should go out and win the race just to screw with the averages. His average finish is 21.9 and he has no top fives and two top 10s in 19 Martinsville starts.

Chase Power Rankings: Have the Big Three become The Big Four?

The fifth race of the Chase is over, and that means it's time for Power Rankings! Now, enjoy.

Oh, and as for last week's attempt at Mafia names for our favorite drivers ... let us never speak of that one again. Every race season has an Auto Club Speedway, right?

1. Denny Hamlin: This top spot is likely to rotate among the Big Three, and perhaps the Big Four, over the next few weeks. Right now, we're giving the nod to Hambone over Vader, but only by a hairsbreadth. This very easily could have been a big victory for Hamlin, and #11 fans should be pleased with the fact that he didn't seem to enjoy his second-place finish very much. Last week: 3.

2. Jimmie Johnson: Another week, another outstanding run from Johnson. Last year, we were all falling over ourselves at how amazing it was that Carl Edwards was finishing so high week after week. Now we've got three guys doing it. Johnson took the wise approach to fuel management on Saturday night; if he'd run out, he'd have a much higher hill to climb. Last week: 2.

3. Brad Keselowski: Sure, he falls out of the top spot here, but he's still running the show points-wise. This makes next week a key for Keselowski: you can afford to have an off week, but you need to be able to rebound immediately or you're going to get passed like you lost the draft. Last week: 1.

4. Clint Bowyer: Rawhide's rise is one of the more notable efforts of the season, and it'd be a shame if he doesn't get himself into the top crew here in the next couple weeks. Also: his press conferences are joys of (perhaps) Five-Hour-Energy-filled energy. Last week: 5.

5. Kasey Kahne: Decent run for Mr. Kahne at Charlotte, but we all expected a lot more out of him. Eighth place is not enough, sir! Anyway, his chances at a Cup are fading fast, but he's already turned a previously horrid season into a success. Last week: 6.

6. Martin Truex Jr.: True story: Truex wants everyone to mean HIM when they refer to "Junior." (May not be a true story.) Also a true story: this will never happen. But MTJ is establishing his good name all by himself. Last week: 9.

7. Jeff Gordon: Looks like the dream is about over for Jeff. Here's hoping that there's some kind of change in the points system (heresy!) in order to prevent one bad finish from decimating your entire season. Last week: 4.

8. Greg Biffle: All right, good to know that Biffle is starting to validate that first-place regular-season finish. Barring some lost haulers en route to a track, Biffle won't be in this hunt. Still, he's the class of the Roush squad this year. Last week: 12.

9. Matt Kenseth: Um, no offense with that "class of Roush" crack in the Biffle entry, Matt. You done good by winning Talladega, of course, but it's been a tough road these last few months. Hopefully your five-race swan song will go well for you. Last week: 10.

10. Tony Stewart: It's been a rocky Chase all the way around for Mr. Stewart, with the Talladega Monstrosity being the worst of a rough go. But he's getting sponsorship lined up for 2013, which has to be a big relief. Last week: 8.

11. Kevin Harvick: Sooner this season is over the better for Harvick fans. Nothing's working well enough, but nothing's going bad enough for a wholesale change, either. Well, at least he had himself a kid, so the year's not a total wash. Last week: 11.

12. Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Salute to Junior for taking the tough path to stepping out of the car this year. Not like he'll miss out on Vegas; the "most popular driver of the year" always ends up there anyway. Last week: 7.

Non-Chaser of the Week: Carl Edwards. Good to see Carl running strong this week. Shame he wasn't able to earlier this year, but if history is any guide, he'll be right back in the mix in 2013.

All right, you're up. Who belongs where? Have your say!

Aston Martin AMVOX7 Chronograph by Jaeger-LeCoultre

Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin are celebrating eight years of partnership with the unveiling of the AMVOX7 - the first vertical-trigger chronograph equipped with a power reserve display. As usual, exclusivity comes with a quite a big price: $26,000.

The watch features design elements seen on the latest Aston Martin models. For example, its dial was inspired by the radiator grille of the Vanquish. As a first for Jaeger-LeCoultre watches, the AMVOX introduces an intuitive display method that is in perfect accord with the sensation of immediacy conferred by a sporting outlook and the power reserve display. You will have to release the lever to unlock the glass, and then press at 12 o’clock to start or stop the timing function. Pressing at 6 o’clock will reset the time.

The watch is equipped with a Jaeger-LeCoultre 756 automatic mechanical caliber with a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a power reserve of 65-hour power reserve. The comparison between the AMVOX’s "motor" to that of the new Aston Martin Vanquish is inevitable.

Jimmie Johnson beats Brad Keselowski on late race restart to extend points lead

FORT WORTH, Texas --If you had any doubts that this Chase wasn't going to be an appropriate sequel to last year's battle between Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart, your feelings should be assuaded after Sunday's AAA Texas 500 after the two drivers atop the Sprint Cup Series points standings traded figurative punches over a flurry of late race restarts.

Five-time champion and incumbent points leader Jimmie Johnson pulled away from Brad Keselowski on the race's ultimate restart with two laps to go to take the race win and extend his points lead by five to seven points with two races to go.

It was a relatively anti-climactic finish after a torrential sequence of racing between the two just before Mark Martin's crash to bring out the race's final caution. On that restart with nine scheduled laps to go, Keselowski started on the inside as the race leader, and drove into turn three on the first lap of the restart with Johnson seemingly attached to his outside.

That got Keselowski loose and allowed Johnson to pull away, albeit for a flash. Keselowski somehow kept the car pointed straight with his foot in the gas and pulled up alongside Johnson on the frontstretch as he wiggled with eight laps to go. As the two dove into one again attached at the sidepanels, Keselowski's car bobbled again. But he stayed in the gas. Again.

As he moved up the track, he Johnson went with him to avoid any contact. Finally, as the two hurtled through turn two, Johnson had to get out of the gas, and Keselowski pulled away, seemingly for the final time. Until Martin crashed.

"I raced hard, and I'm sure someone would say dirty," Keselowski said. Hell, anytime you run close to certain guys you're racing them dirty according to certain people. But I raced hard and we both came back around, so there's something to be said for that."

After that restart Johnson wasn't happy with Keselowski, saying he jumped the restart, and when the caution for Martin came out, he pulled up alongside Keselowski toshow his displeasure for the racing that had taken place. However, afterwards, out of the heat of the moment, Johnson acknowledged the racing that got hot, but didn't boil over.

"I just pointed at him and wanted him to use his head," Johnson said. "There's no sense in taking us both out in the process. If he was taking me out you can count on the fact that I would have been in the gas and trying to take him with me. And it just doesn't need to come down to that.

"Brad also after the race came into victory lane and shook my hand. The cool thing about it is we walked up to that line, we got right to the edge. And then it stopped and he showed a very class move coming to victory lane and shaking my hand afterwards too."

On the ultimate restart, Keselowski spun the tires ever so slightly, which allowed Johnson to beat him to the line. Even with Keselowski as they headed into turn one, Johnson pinched him down to the white line and took off like a rocket.

"Yeah, I felt like we were just going to wreck. I wasn't looking to be the guy that wrecked him poorly," Keselowski said. I didn't really enjoy the last time that happened with Kyle (Busch) over here (at Bristol in the Nationwide Series), and I don't think he did either. He might not believe that, but that's just not the way you want to run a race and not the way I want to win a championship."

"That was pretty much the only choice I had was to put ourselves in a bad position like I did before. I felt lucky to survive that one."

After pitting from the lead on lap 276, Keselowski wanted to stop short in his pit stall for a clean exit, but slid the tires as he slowed to a stop. So instead of a clean exit, his crew was forced to push him backwards so he could get out, and he fell from first to ninth.

He worked his way up to fifth when the caution came out on lap 311 for Marcos Ambrose's crash, and while the four cars in front took four tires, Keselowski took two, allowing him to leave the pits in first.

At a track like Texas that has fairly significant tire fall-off, it was impressive that Keselowski was able to hold off the four fresh-tired drivers behind him on two restarts. And when he had sprinted away from Johnson after their dustup, it looked like it'd be the winning strategy and one that would have given him a one point lead heading into Phoenix and Homestead.

"But getting that last yellow ? and with restarts, and I've used this analogy, they're like rock, paper, scissors," Keselowski said. "Eventually you're going to lose them, it's just a matter of time, because there's always a strategy to counter-act the strategy. To win two out of three I felt lucky to do that, but I didn't win the last one today."

And it meant that Johnson won the race and lengthened his points lead. While Keselowski said he feels he controls his own destiny, as he could win the championship by winning the final two races and leading the most laps if Johnson finishes second, Johnson likes his spot too, especially after winning back to back races from the first starting position.

"It's a small amount of control but we're definitely in control," Johnson said. "We don't have to make up any points. Seven points is nothing to feel comfortable about or to relax on. So we're going to go into Phoenix and act as if we're behind and go in there to try and sit on the pole and win the race again."

Yamaha XT250

The dual sport character of the Yamaha XT250 has conquered a lot of fans. To keep its fans loyal, Yamaha came up with a series of small upgrades for the 2013 model year. The biggest change is represented by the new fuel injection system which replaces the earlier model?s 33mm Teikei carburetor. Yamaha claims that thanks to the new fuel injection system the bike offers an improved fuel economy of 76 mpg - a 3 mph improvement when compared to the old 73 mpg rating.

The bike is propelled by a 249cc air-cooled SOHC engine married to a five speed transmission. The engine remained unchanged, but it received a larger gas tank to improve the bike?s range (2.6 gallons versus 2.4 gallons on last year?s model). Another important modification was the replacement of the old CDI (Capacitive Discharge Ignition) ignition system with a new TCI (Transistor Controlled Ignition) technology.

The suspensions remained unchanged and the bike continues to sit on a 35mm telescopic fork with 8.9-inches of travel and a swingarm with rebound-adjustable monoshock with 7.1-inches of travel.

As far as breaking power goes, the 2013 Yamaha XT250 is equipped with 245mm front and 203mm rear disc brakes.
