Paul Pittman flips his car in first NHRA Pro Stock start
Paul Pittman's first NHRA start also became his first NHRA flip.
In the first round of Sunday's Pro Stock division at the Mile High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway in Colorado, Pittman's car ? one he built himself -- started to drift towards the center line as he headed towards the finish line against top seed Allen Johnson.
As he moved to correct, the car turned sideways as it crossed the finish line and flipped over. Thankfully, it landed on its wheels after just one rotation, but then Pittman slammed into the wall twice after grazing it and catching on fire after the final impact. Pittman was unhurt, and thanked the NHRA's rules for being able to climb out of the car unscathed.
"Well, just pretty bad about the car, that's what I feel bad about. My wife was pretty excited? but I tried not to hit the cones," Pittman said after his crash. "I felt it get a little fishy on me and I just started towards the cones and I tried to go correct it so I wouldn't hit a cone and next thing I know (the car) started washing back and forth and then the next thing she went upside down and then I saw that wall coming and I said 'Man, this is going to be a big hit' because we were going at a big clip anyways, I don't know."
"And I hit the wall, after I hit the wall then I said "Oh, well, got by that' and then it slid over and it went to the other wall and I said 'well, hold on for that one.' Because it doesn't look good either. The second impact wasn't as strong as the first. "
"But all the safety equipment, all of NHRA's rules that everybody complains and bitch about is the reason I'm standing here right now."
Duo Interview: Nicky Hayden And Crew Chief Juan Martinez On Working Together
The second pair of subjects in our series of interviews with rider and crew chief are Nicky Hayden and Juan Martinez. After Hayden left Honda and joined Ducati, he was first paired with Cristhian Pupulin - or Pipi, as he is called by the Italians in Ducati - but after a few races, Ducati switched Pupulin's role and recruited Juan Martinez to take over as crew chief. Since then, the relationship has blossomed, with the Kentuckian and the Spaniard building a good understanding of each other and getting to grips well with the difficult Ducati.
We spoke to Hayden and Martinez at the Sachsenring, ahead of the German GP there. During an interesting 15 minutes, we spoke about how the pair started to work together, what it takes to build a strong relationship between crew chief and rider, and where Hayden and Martinez feel the other excel. It provided a fascinating insight into the way that rider and crew chief work together, and the level of trust and respect the two must have for it to be a succes.
MotoMatters.com: I want to talk about your relationship, the two of you, and the way that you work together. Because to me, the relationship between rider and crew chief is so crucial. First of all, Nicky, when you joined Ducati, you had Pipi [the nickname of Cristhian Pupulin, a long-time Ducati engineer] as a crew chief. That lasted three or four races, but communication was difficult because of the language barrier. How did you end up paired with Juan?
Nicky Hayden: Well, Pipi was a great crew chief. His knowledge was very good, but the language was just too hard. We couldn't communicate, that was very difficult. So we could see after a few races it wasn't going to work. So we started to look around, see who was out there that spoke English, and also somebody that knew Italian.
I couldn't have had a better situation, because Juan had already been at Ducati. So he was able to jump in five races into the season and already have an understanding of the bike, the team. Speaks perfect English, perfect Italian. [Juan Martinez protests modestly] So I was really lucky.

2012 Silverstone World Supersport FP1: Lowes Dominates At Home
The morning free-practice was run in dry and cool conditions and was dominated by an upbeat Sam Lowes. BMW M3 CLS by MR Car Design
| Posted on 08.2.2012 10:00 by Simona | |
Back in 2004, BMW was launching one of the coolest M3 special editions ever: the M3 CSL (Coup Sport Leichtbau). This model was limited to only 1,400 units, none of which made it over to the US market. Now, German tuner MR Car Design has transformed this very cool M3 CSL into an even cooler race car.
The package starts with replacing the doors and tailgates with new ones made of strong resistant carbon. It then continues with adding a very cool rear wing from a Porsche GT3. The side and rear windows are made of Plexiglas - a measure done to further reduce the car’s original weight of 3,050 lb.
Under the hood, the original 3.2L engine was provided with modifications to the ECU and was then hooked up to a new exhaust system for a total of 391 HP, up from the standard 360 HP. In order to handle the extra 31 HP, the M3 CSL was equipped with a new brake system consisting of six pistons in the front and four in the back, as well as a new set of wheels.
Finishing off the look is a very cool dark blue color foil combined with racing strips in Bright Blue Metallic and Cherry Red.
The price for this updated BMW M3 CLS by MR Car Design is 130,000 euros - about $160,000 at the current exchange rates - but we think it’s totally worth it!

Jimmie Johnson and his best friend Pricklebear
ESPN picks up the remainder of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season starting at Indianapolis, and Jimmie Johnson is featured in ESPN's first commercial promoting its coverage.
This year's commercials continue last year's theme of "Nothing Beats First Place," and Johnson, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin and Brad Keselowski will be featured in the spots throughout the final 17 races of the season.
For us, the video above raises an important question; will we see an influx of 48 fans naming their next born "Pricklebear and/or buying a pet porcupine?

Yes, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is in first place. Really.

Up is down! Black is white! Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be leading the NASCAR points race in August!
We're here, folks. We're here at the point where no sane NASCAR fan (a contradiction in terms, we grant you) can in any way deny that Dale Earnhardt Jr. is a legitimate championship contender in 2012.
This is no small statistical matter. Earnhardt is in most ways the face of NASCAR: its most popular driver, its most recognizable name, its most marketable commodity. But in the one way that really counts ? wins ? he ranks far behind his peers. And for most of the last half-dozen years, you couldn't even say "championship contender Dale Earnhardt Jr." without dissolving into fits of laughter.
[Related: Jimmie Johnson dominates at Indy for fourth Brickyard win]
Everything's different now. At the Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis on Sunday, some steady driving, yet another top-five finish, and a fortuitous-for-Junior late-race wreck involving then-leader Matt Kenseth put Earnhardt right at the top of the standings. This marks the latest in the season he's been this high since 2004, back when everyone assumed the 2000s would belong to Junior, back when everyone still thought "the Cowboys coach?" when they heard "Jimmie Johnson." (Technically, he held the lead in October 2004, but lost it after a points deduction for cursing in victory lane, so NASCAR "officially" has his latest lead as September 2004 after New Hampshire.)
The 2000s came and went, and so too did chance after chance for Earnhardt to establish dominance ? hell, even a fingerhold ? atop the NASCAR heap. Shortly after he joined the Hendrick Dream Team, Earnhardt began The Streak; one of the uglier runs in professional sports; a four-year, 143-race losing run whose effects even today keep a significant majority of NASCAR fans from taking the possibility of an Earnhardt championship seriously.
It's time to start doing exactly that. With his fourth-place finish on Sunday, Earnhardt tied Jeff Gordon's record of consecutive lead-lap finishes with 21. He's got a win on the season, but then so does Joey Logano. What distinguishes Earnhardt this year is the way he's staying near the front, race after race. He's got 15 top-10 finishes in 20 races, a total matched only by Jimmie Johnson. And only Johnson's 10 top fives exceed Earnhardt's nine.
[Related: Complete results from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway]
Earnhardt's detractors are having to dig deeper to find reasons to cut on the 88 team. Sure, you could say that he's always fallen short before, and thus he will again. But you could have said that about any driver who's never won a championship. You could also say that simply running close to the front is no guarantee of success; Carl Edwards proved that last year. But you could also note that a driver has to be close to have a chance, and Earnhardt is keeping himself close, week after week.
Will Earnhardt win the 2012 Sprint Cup? As Edwards, Kevin Harvick and others could attest, a regular-season points lead is worth a handful of greasy lug nuts come Chase time. And there doesn't appear to be any driver capable of challenging Jimmie Johnson on a week-to-week basis.
Still, Earnhardt is here, in command as the summer wanes, and that's something that only the most delusional denizens of Junior Nation would have predicted back in February. Enjoy the ride, Junior fans, for as long as it lasts ... and it might last right on through the season finale in Homestead, Fla.
