Another Oil Sponsor Joins MotoGP: Bel-Ray Backs Aspar For 2012

After the news two days ago that ENEOS is to be backing Yamaha's MotoGP squad, more good news on the sponsorship front. Bel-Ray, manufacturer of a range of automotive lubrication products, today announced that they will be expanding their presence in the MotoGP paddock by backing Team Aspar's efforts in all three classes of MotoGP. The US oil producer will be supplying a range of products for the Aspar team to use in MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3.

The move sees Bel-Ray expanding its sponsorship activities in international motorcycle racing. After starting off in 2011, supporting the Tech 3 Moto2 team, Bel-Ray has added support for Carlos Checa's Althea Ducati squad for the 2012 World Superbike season, as well as the complete Aspar line up. The sponsorship arrangement is also a positive sign for both the Moto2 and Moto3 classes, where it has been possible to attract sponsorship from a company selling lubricants despite the fact that the regulations impose a single supplier of engine oil on the class.

James Hinchcliffe to take Danica Patrick?s IndyCar seat

James Hinchcliffe, the 2011 Izod IndyCar Rookie of the Year, has signed with Andretti Autosport to drive the GoDaddy car in 2012, replacing Danica Patrick after her departure to NASCAR full-time.

If you're a casual race fan who doesn't watch much IndyCar, you're probably wondering "Who's that?" or typing his name in the search bar in the top right corner. But don't worry, you may know him soon enough given all the GoDaddy ads during sporting events.

From USA Today:

"I'm stepping into her heels, if you will," Hinchcliffe laughed about replacing Danica Patrick as the driver of Andretti Autosport's Go Daddy-sponsored No. 27 Chevrolet in 2012. "But that's part of what makes this deal so exciting because they did such a good job with Danica and her Go Daddy Girl image. I hope that makes me the first Go Daddy Guy."

Hinchcliffe, 25, drove for now (sadly) defunct Newman-Haas Racing in 2011 and had fourth place finishes at Long Beach, Loudon and Kentucky -- and he narrowly beat out the same initialed JR Hildebrand for the rookie of the year award. Hildebrand was leading the Indianapolis 500 on the final corner before he crashed and finished second to Dan Wheldon.

While Hinchcliffe is replacing Patrick, the ride was reported to be Wheldon's in 2012 before Wheldon was killed in a crash October 16 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The addition of Hinchcliffe puts Andretti Autosport now at three full-time cars for 2012 along with Marco Andretti and Ryan Hunter-Reay. Michael Andretti, owner of Andretti Autosport, will be on 'Celebrity Apprentice' in February.

Carl Edwards will co-host ?Live with Kelly Ripa.? Yep.

In the tradition of NASCAR greats like Dale Earnhardt and Fireball Roberts, Carl Edwards will co-host a NYC-based morning talk show, in this case the Regis-less "LIVE! with Kelly" on Tuesday, Jan. 10.

"LIVE!" (we're very sensitive about the proper use of the exclamation point here at Yahoo!) stars, of course, Kelly Ripa, and in this case she's taking on various pro athletes as co-hosts for a week. Other co-hosts will include Reggie Bush, Boomer Esiason, Jesse Palmer and Apolo Anton Ohno.

Jeff Gordon co-hosted the show once; Edwards has been a guest but not a co-host. Check your local listings, Cuz fans.

Lexus LF-Lc

After seeing tons of teaser images in the past few weeks, we are finally able to get a good look at the new Lexus LF-LC concept during its world debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. The concept was designed by Lexus Calty design studio in Newport Beach, California and previews the future design language of Toyota’s luxury arm, bringing in elements from the LF-A supercar and the recently launched GS 350.

The concept features a bold interpretation of the signature Lexus spindle grille and rear architecture and is defined by a long engine hood, daytime running lights shaped like an "L", a 3D spindle grille, and functional air intakes in the bottom corners of the grille.

"Crafted from a clean sheet of paper at the request of Lexus headquarters in Japan, the LF-LC blends both high technology and organic shapes to connect the driver to the machine," said Mark Templin, Lexus group vice president and general manager. "The clean lines of the vehicle emphasize motion, creating a distinctive look for this futuristic sport coupe."

UPDATE 01/09/12: This review has been updated with the official images and specs for the Lexus LF-Lc.

UPDATE 01/10/12: Today we have added a new video for the LF-LC concept. Enjoy!

Lexus LF-Lc originally appeared on topspeed.com on Tuesday, 10 January 2012 08:00 EST.

Daytona winner Trevor Bayne returning to Wood Brothers

Trevor Bayne will be defending his Daytona 500 title for the Wood Brothers as the team made Bayne's return to the No. 21 in 2012 official on Thursday.

From the Wood Brothers Racing site:

"It's taken a long time to get to this announcement, but it's good to be back together," team co-owner Eddie Wood said. "We all wanted to do what was best for Ford Motor Company and its young drivers, and to be sure everybody had a place to race."

While Bayne won the Daytona 500, Ricky Stenhouse won the Nationwide Series title and there was speculation that Stenhouse could inherit the ride in 2 012. Both drive for Roush-Fenway Racing in the Nationwide Series, and when Bayne, 20, was sidelined with lyme disease for part of the 2011 season, Stenhouse replaced him in the Coca-Cola 600. (Stenhouse will race in the 500 in the Roush Fenway No. 6.)

Motorcraft/Quick Lane also returns to the No. 21, but it's unclear how many races the team will attempt in 2012. Last year, the team had enough funding after the Daytona win to run 18 races.

Believe it or not, that Daytona win was Bayne's only top 10 in 17 Cup starts in 2011. In 29 starts in the Nationwide Series last year, Bayne won the fall race at Texas Motor Speedway and had 14 top 10s.

Look back at the 2011 seasons of Kahne, Dinger and Biffle

As the 2012 season nears, one last look back at the year that was for your favorite drivers. We continue on with several of the non-Chase competitors.

First up, Kasey Kahne, the guy who came on very strong at the end of the season. 2012 is going to be a good year for him, we can feel it.

Next up, AJ Allmendinger, another guy who ended 2012 in a lot better position than he started:

Finally, Greg Biffle, who continues to get close but not close enough:

Ten Kate To Prepare Honda Engines For Gresini CRT MotoGP Bike

After many years of success in the World Superbike and World Supersport series, Ten Kate is to take their first steps in the MotoGP paddock. The Dutch race shop has been contracted by Gresini to supply race-prepared Honda CBR1000RR engines for Gresini's CRT machine in MotoGP, along with the fly-by-wire electronics system the Ten Kate team developed together with Cosworth for their World Superbike machine.

According to the Dutch racing website Racesport.nl, Ten Kate Racing Products, the commercial arm of the race team and the Honda dealership owned by Ronald and Gerrit ten Kate, signed a contract with the Gresini team just before Christmas to seal the agreement. Ten Kate will supply complete Honda CBR1000RR engines, tuned and prepared by them, along with a complete electronic system, including the fly-by-wire system used on the WSBK machine. The Ten Kate engine is to be fitted into a custom chassis designed and built by FTR. Both FTR and Gresini were very keen to work with Ten Kate, given their long experience and success in the World Superbike series.
