Power Rankings: A Five-Time face back at the top

It's time for Power Rankings! After every race, we'll opine about who we think is at the top of the Sprint Cup heap and how and why they got there. Remember, this isn't scientific, as our formula is the perfect blend of analytics and bias against your favorite driver. So let's get on with it, shall we?

1. Jimmie Johnson (LW: 3): What's the best way to cap off your most dominating win at the track you've dominated the most in your Sprint Cup career to take the points lead? Announce on Tuesday that your second child is due in September. Congratulations, Jimmie and Chandra.

2. Brad Keselowski (LW: 4): Keselowski doesn't have the stats like Johnson or Denny Hamlin when it comes to Martinsville, but Sunday was his third straight top 10 there. And that ability to finish in the top 10 and therefore keep both of those drivers in sight if they're the ones battling for the lead will serve him well once again in October.

3. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (LW: 1): It wasn't a graceful spin from the top spot for Junior, who saw his day head south over the last 100 laps of Sunday's race, and especially after he went spinning off of Danica Patrick, who got bumped by Brian Vickers. And that incident does bring up a good point: If you're playing the Danica Patrick drinking game, what should the required action have been on lap 467?

4. Kasey Kahne (LW: 2): Pardon me for asking, but unless you're a Kasey Kahne fan, did you have any idea that Kahne finished fourth? Talk about an under the radar top five. Yeah, Kahne was near the front all day, but he was never a focal point throughout the race. But you know what? If you're not in the lead, it's usually not a good thing if you're being focused on at Martinsville.

5. Kyle Busch (LW: 5): If his brother Kurt describes his relationship with Martinsville as "complicated," how does Kyle describe it? The same way? In 17 races, he's got 9 top 10s and finishes of 39. 18, 38. 29. 24, 22, 27 and 36. Sunday he was in the former category. That's why he gets to maintain his spot.

6. Matt Kenseth (LW: 11): Entering Sunday, Kenseth had led 73 laps in his Martinsville career. On Sunday, he led 96. He's never been terrible at Martinsville, but just not good either. So here comes the million dollar question, courtesy of Chad Knaus: How much of that was Kenseth and how much was that his Joe Gibbs Racing car?

7. Clint Bowyer (LW: NR): Yeah, it was a short track, but it's always fun to see a beat up car competing for the lead late in the race, and there's no other way to describe Bowyer's machine. And, thankfully, there were no fireworks between Bowyer and Jeff Gordon late in the race.

8. Jeff Gordon (LW: NR): Nice little bounceback for the original Four-Time to finish third. And yes, we're also going to write in this paragraph here that it was so nice to not see the feud between Bowyer and Gordon extended unnecessarily. Is it as over as Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber now?

9. Greg Biffle (LW: 9): Biffle was ninth going into Martinsville and finished ninth so he gets to stay ninth. That's a damn good finish for the Biff there. And another reason for optimism? He's heading to his best track, a place where he won a year ago.

10. Carl Edwards (LW: 8): Last year, a 15th place finish was the norm for Edwards. This year, it's just his fourth best finish of the first six. He could record his fourth top five (one more than he had all last year) at Texas.

11. Paul Menard (LW: 10): Yeah, the Menarddog only finished 19th, but he's still eighth in the points. That buys you a Power Rankings reprieve for the time being. That was Menard's 12th start at Martinsville and his fifth-highest finish.
12. Jamie McMurray (LW: NR): How the hell do you have McMurray in the Power Rankings? There are so many other drivers that... oh, McMurray is 13th? And he finished 7th Sunday? Yeah, you're good. Good call.

Dropped Out: Joey Logano, Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch.

Lucky Dog: Mark Martin, for grabbing a top 10 after being two laps down.

The Tony Stewart DNF: Seriously Stewart, what's the deal? Smoke went backwards yet again at the end of the race and finished 17th. It's not time to panic just yet, but who'da thunk that two drivers who've missed a race (Martin and Hamlin) are ahead of Stewart in the standings?

Power Rankings: It?s team time, and Penske?s tops

After every race, we'll opine about who we think is at the top of the Sprint Cup heap and how and why they got there. Remember, this isn't scientific, as our formula is the perfect blend of analytics and bias against your favorite driver. But it's an off-week! So instead of your favorite driver, this week, it's your favorite team. Let's roll.

1. Penske Racing: In this case, Penske's two-car team is an advantage; though you're not going to find many, if any, people who say it's a hinderance. Brad Keselowski's first finish outside the top 10 was at California and in that race, he had charged through the field before being derailed by Timmy Hill's oil. His new teammate, Joey Logano, is ninth in the points despite having an, uh, adventurous start to the 2013 season.

2. Hendrick Motorsports: They've got the points leader, and thy name is Junior. And they've got the guy in third (Jimmie Johnson) and the guy in seventh (Kasey Kahne.) But that dang lead weight Jeff Gordon (18th) is dragging them down. Just imagine if every team had a four-time champion -- and still championship contender -- pulling up the rear.

3. Roush Fenway Racing;
The top four spots are all pretty close. Roush boasts drivers No. 4 (Greg Biffle) and No. 5 in the standings (Carl Edwards) and Ricky Stenhouse is more than holding his own in 12th. He'll probably have to get a win or two if Roush wants to have all three cars in Chase contention as the season moves through the summer, but it's definitely not out of the realm of possibility.

4. Joe Gibbs Racing: Three guys in the top 11 in points. For a few more days, anyway. And just think where they'd be if Busch and Kenseth's engines would have made it to the end of the Daytona 500? Though at this point, the engine woes seem like the price to pay for the otherwise sustained excellence of the JGR cars, no?

5. Michael Waltrip Racing: If you took the combined points of Mark Martin's four races in the No. 55 and Brian Vickers' one race, the No. 55 would be a single point ahead of Clint Bowyer for 13th in the driver's points standings. And Bowyer would be higher if it wasn't for that catastrophic engine failure. If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, well, they'd be smoked and roasted on the manifold of a TRD engine.

6. Richard Childress Racing: Paul Menard being the team's highest driver in points isn't as surprising as it would be two years ago, and neither is the fact that he's eighth in the points standings. Since crashing at Daytona, Kevin Harvick's notched four top 15 finishes, but he, along with Menard and Jeff Burton, haven't been contending for wins.

7. Richard Petty Motorsports: Outside of Bristol, Aric Almirola has been Mr. Consistent (four finishes between 13th and 16th). Marcos Ambrose has been consistent too, but a few notches below Almirola with four finishes between 18th and 22nd. They're not on the verge of breaking through the top of the package, but there's something to be said for not drilling a hole in the bottom either.

8. Stewart-Haas Racing: Through five races, it seems unfathomable that they'd be this low, but there's not a convincing argument to put them any higher on the list, though things would be a bit different if Tony Stewart had stayed near the front over the final 11 laps at Auto Club. Instead he didn't and he took it out on Joey Logano. The forgotten man, Ryan Newman, has three top 10 finishes, but is 20th because of tire issues at Phoenix and an engine failure at Las Vegas. And yes, Danica Patrick needs to start performing better and running longer on the lead lap.

9. Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing: Jamie McMurray is six spots ahead of where he was last year at this time, but Juan Pablo Montoya is 12 spots lower. Three finishes of 30th or worse will do that to you.

10. Tommy Baldwin Racing: Running two cars full-time for the full distances has paid off so far for Tommy Baldwin, as JJ Yeley is 26th and Dave Blaney is 28th.

Man?s obituary, embracing Jesus and Dale Earnhardt, is a winner

Obituaries. We all have one in our future, hopefully much later rather than sooner. And while some obituaries can rise to the level of art, making the life examined one worthy of admiration, some make us look forward to the afterlife. Like this one, from the Northeast Mississippi News:

Timothy Wayne "Tim" Hopkins, 54, went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and Dale Earnhardt to contribute his building and painting expertise to the constructing of many heavenly mansions on Saturday, March 23, 2013, in Memphis.

We should all be so lucky to get such a sendoff. Godspeed in your journey, Mr. Hopkins. But you might not want to tell Mr. Earnhardt too much about what's happening with Twitter wars and the Chase. You don't want to see tears in heaven.

No April Fool: Danica Patrick was at the White House Easter Egg Roll

Need further proof of Danica Patrick's name recognition? Look no further than the White House Easter Egg Roll.

Patrick was in attendance on Monday, GoDaddy leather jacket and all, and tweeted the above picture after she said she met President Obama and family, including their dog Bo. Denny Hamlin out at least five races because of back injury

Denny Hamlin will miss at least five races but won't require surgery after being evaluated on Tuesday after his last-lap crash on Sunday at Auto Club Speedway.

In the impact with the inside wall, Hamlin suffered a compression fracture of his L1 vertebra. Joe Gibbs Racing said in a statement Tuesday night that Dr. Jerry Petty determined that Hamlin would need approximately six weeks to heal. Petty will make the decision to clear Hamlin to resume racing activity when he is fully healed.

Because of the Sprint Cup Series off weekend this week, the minimum five races Hamlin will miss are Martinsville, Texas, Kansas, Richmond and Talladega. The race following Talladega is the grueling Southern 500 at Darlington before the non-points Sprint All-Star Race and the Coca-Cola 600.

[Also: NASCAR Power Rankings: A (Junior) Nation rises]

A replacement driver has not been named for the No. 11 for Martinsville or any other races. The logical in-house option at JGR would be Elliott Sadler, who is running for the team in the Nationwide Series. The team's other full-time Nationwide Series driver, Brian Vickers, is scheduled to be in the No. 55 at Martinsville.

Before you ask, it's highly unlikely that Hamlin will be able to make the Chase in 2013. And, as it should be, that's likely the furthest thing from his or the team's mind.

Kyle Busch goes for ?Anger Management? with Charlie Sheen ? on TV, at least

NASCAR fans have long said that noted temperamental driver Kyle Busch could use some anger management. Now ? heads up, terrible pun coming out of Turn 4 ? he's about to get some, courtesy of FX and Charlie Sheen.

Yes, the NASCAR driver everyone loves to hate is headed for Sheen's FX show "Anger Management," according to TMZ. No info yet on a date or plotline, but we'd bet it has something to do with either driving or those little dogs hanging around the hauler. You never know.

And hey, if this works out for Kyle, maybe Sheen could work his mojo on Tony Stewart ... or Joey Logano ... or Kyle's brother Kurt ... or pretty much every NASCAR fan ...

Video: Porsche 918 Spyder spotted in Monaco

Youtube user, NM2255, managed to shoot another great video: a Porsche 918 Spyder caught at the Top Marques Monaco event. The prototype caught in Monaco was wearing a matte black paint with Martini Racing livery and racing number "23."

The production version 918 Spyder will be powered by a hybrid system that combines a 570-horsepower 4.6-liter V-8 engine with a pair of electric motors ? one powering the front axle and one on the rear ? that pump out 85 kW (114 horsepower) and 95 kW (127 horsepower), respectively. According to Porsche, the 918 Spyder will offer a driving range of 15 miles in electric-only driving mode and can hit a top speed of 202 mph when the gasoline engine and electric motors are working together.

The new 918 Spyder will be put on sale in September 2013 and pricing will start at $845,000.

NASCAR drops hammer on Keselowski and Logano, penalizes Truex Jr. and Hornaday

On Wednesday, NASCAR issued penalties to both Penske teams that could deal significant blows to the championship and Chase hopes of Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano.

In separate decisions, NASCAR also handed down penalties against Martin Truex Jr. and Ron Hornaday.

The Penske teams' penalties were severe and long-reaching, and stemmed from violations of NASCAR's Sections 12-1; 12-4J and 20-12. Both teams' crew chiefs, car chiefs, engineers and competition directors were suspended for six races, including the All-Star Race in Charlotte. The crew chiefs were fined $100,000 apiece. And both teams lost 25 championship points, which drops Keselowski from 2nd to 4th and Logano from 9th to 14th place.

The penalties will cause considerable difficulty for both teams as they prepare for the Chase. While Keselowski, the defending champion, remains in solid shape to make the Chase, Logano was in the midst of his best season ever. Logano now finds himself outside the Chase, fighting for a highly competitive spot. Without the services of their crew chiefs, both teams will lose out on valuable prep time at Chase tracks, including Kansas, Talladega and Charlotte.

Truex's car failed post-race inspection, putting it in violation of Sections 12-1, 12-4J, and 20-12.8.1B. More specifically, the car failed to meet minimum height during the inspection. Truex lost six driver points and six owner points. Crew chief Chad Johnston was fined $25,000 and placed on probation until June 5.

Hornaday also received a 25-point penalty and a fine of $25,000 for wrecking Darrell Wallace Jr. under caution during Sunday's truck race at Rockingham. Hornaday was not suspended, which was the fine Kyle Busch received for wrecking Hornaday at Texas in 2011.
