Almirola and Ambrose?s teams swap crews for final 10 races

Richard Petty Motorsports announced Monday that it would be swapping the crews for it's No. 43 team of Aric Almirola and No. 9 team of Marcos Ambrose for the remainder of the season.

The swaps include crew chiefs, as Mike Ford moves to the No. 9 and Todd Parrott moves atop Almirola's box.

"We're continuing to make improvements at Richard Petty Motorsports and we've added talented people to our organization this season," RPM director of competition Sammy Johns said in a release. "This move is to make sure that we are using that talent to the fullest to get the best results for our teams each weekend. We feel this adjustment will strengthen the organization, allow us to continue to compete for wins and ultimately challenge for championships."

Ford was Denny Hamlin's crew chief in 2011, and replaced Greg Erwin as Almirola's crew chief after the first nine races of the season. Almirola's highest finish in the 17 races they were together was a 6th place finish at Dover.

Ambrose and Parrott have won the last two Watkins Glen races and had eight top 10s in 26 races this season. Ambrose is currently 15th in the points standings.

Matt Kenseth says Talladega win was a boost for his final six races at Roush

Still in 12th in the Chase points standings after Sunday's win at Talladega, Matt Kenseth's championship hopes are pretty much nonexistent in his final season at Roush Fenway Racing, and Kenseth said Tuesday that the win was integral in helping him feel better about he and the team's split when they officially part ways in six more races.

"Well, it's made me feel a little bit better about certain things," Kenseth said."I mean, it's really important for me to finish this thing off on a high note.It would just break my heart if the thing was broken when I left.So I certainly didn't want that."

"And we had a really rough few weeks in The Chase with parts breaking and following off and not getting good finishes and not running good and everybody was getting close to being at each other's throats and things like that. So it's important for me to try to really try to keep that whole unit as a cohesive front-running championship-contending unit. So I'm hoping in the next six weeks we can continue this momentum, hoping we can get another win or two and finish as high as we can in the points and end this thing on a high note."

Kenseth was the series' best driver at restrictor plate tracks this season, also winning the Daytona 500 and finishing third twice. Drivers rarely move on to other teams when things are going well, so that's one reason that Kenseth became just the third different Chase driver, along with Tony Stewart in 2008 and Kurt Busch last year, to win a Chase race the season before leaving for a new team. But Kenseth said that once he met with Joe and JD Gibbs, his decision to take over the driving duties of the No. 20 wasn't as difficult as you might have expected.

"When I've talked to Joe and JD and went and saw some of their stuff and spent some time with them, I just really felt like that was the right place for me," Kenseth said. "I felt really comfortable with everything. I feel really good about their stuff, when you watch how good all their cars perform on the racetrack and how many races they win and all that kind of stuff, I just felt like that was the place for me."

"It really wasn't as hard or I wasn't probably as conflicted as one might think."

Quicken Loans to sponsor Ryan Newman in 18 races in 2013

A large piece of the sponsorship puzzle at Stewart-Haas Racing for 2013 has been found.

SHR announced Tuesday that Quicken Loans was upping its commitment next year and will sponsor Ryan Newman in 18 races after being the primary sponsor for nine this season. Earlier in the year, the US Army, which has been with Newman since he arrived at Stewart-Haas and sponsored 12 races this season, announced that it wouldn't be returning in 2013. Originally a free agent at the end of the season, Newman signed a one-year deal to remain with the team for 2013.

In September, Office Depot, sponsor of defending Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart in 22 races this season, announced that it wouldn't be returning to Stewart's car in 2013. While that looks to leave a gaping hood on Stewart's car, indications are that Bass Pro Shops will replace Office Depot. Bass Pro currently serves as the primary sponsor for Jamie McMurray at Earnhardt Ganassi Racing.

Newman could also have a new crew next year, as his crew, including crew chief Tony Gibson, could move to the No. 10 of Danica Patrick as she runs a full Sprint Cup Series schedule. She's one driver that sponsorship isn't an issue for at Stewart-Haas; she's all set with GoDaddy for the entire season.

BMW 1M Coupe by TJ Fahrzeugdesign

So, maybe it was a money issue or a timing issue, but you held off on putting your deposit down on the limited-run 1M Coupe. Now, you’re likely kicking yourself as you realize just how popular it was and just how tough it may become to get your hands on one of the 6,331 of them in existence today. If you don?t feel like waiting for a reasonably priced 1M to hit the used market and really only care about the performance of the 1M and not the ?official? name, German Tuner, TJ Fahrzeugdesign, may have the answer for you.

TJ Fahrzeugdesign, which translates out to TJ Vehicle Design, has released a tuning and appearance kit that will give your run-of-the-mill 1-Series coupe the look and feel of the 1M coupe. Actually, you will likely annihilate any 1M coupe on the street in this machine, thanks to four extra cylinders and loads more power than the stock 1M.

So how does TJ Fahrzeugdesign?s really stand up to the 1M coupe?

Tony Eury Jr., Danica Patrick?s crew chief, now out at JR Motorsports

Just over a week after Tony Eury Sr. and JR Motorsports parted ways comes more surprising-but-not-really news: His son, Tony Eury Jr., has also left the company. Eury Jr. was both Danica Patrick's crew chief and a part-owner of the company.

"Unfortunately Tony Jr. is no longer with the company," Dale Earnhardt Jr. said in a statement. "I had hoped he would be here for a long time, but as we've discussed the direction of JR Motorsports moving forward, it was clear our differences in ideas were too vast to overcome. I love him like a brother, and you'll never hear me say a bad thing about him. I know he'll have much success in anything he does going forward."

That's got to be tough for Earnhardt, but as the weeks wore on this season, it became clear that something was very off at JR Motorsports. The question, of course, is what. Let's speculate a bit: JR Motorsports revolves around Danica Patrick, and Patrick has, to put it charitably, not exactly lit the track on fire this season. (That's what's called a "softball" for you commenters.)

Could a difference of opinion on Ms. Patrick's value and potential be the cause of the rift between the Earnhardts and the Eurys? It's certainly possible. Tony Eury Sr. said at the time of his departure that the team needs more proven Cup-level drivers, and whatever millions Patrick may generate, she's not yet a proven Cup-level driver.

Regardless, it's a tough day for fans of Earnhardt. Watching the team from this point on without the assistance and advice of the Eurys will be interesting indeed.

Flammini Says 2013 World Superbike Series "To Go Ahead As Planned," But What Of The Future

After the bombshell announcement that Bridgepoint was putting Dorna in charge of both the MotoGP and World Superbike series, the media were keen to get a reaction from either of the Flammini brothers, the two men who had helped to grow the series into the success it is today, and who currently run WSBK. After an initial deafening silence, Paolo Flammini finally made an appearance at Magny-Cours on Sunday morning, to explain his, and Infront's, point of view. Our friends at the Italian website InfoMotoGP.com were present to record the press conference on video.

Flammini did not say much - indeed, he started his speech with the words "I don't have much to add to what is written in the press release," - but what he did say helped clarify the situation a little. Starting off with an understatement - "This step represents a very big moment in the history of World Superbikes", Flammini told the assembled media - the Italian was at pains to make clear that World Superbikes would face few changes for 2013. "Many people are worried for the 2013 season, but nothing special will happen," he said, emphasizing that his aim was to keep stability in the series.

2012 Chase Prospects: Is it Dale Earnhardt Jr.?s time at long last?

And here we are at last, Dale Earnhardt Jr. in position for a championship. He's in his best position standings-wise in nearly a decade, and he's running better, in an aggregate sense, than he ever has in his career. (His average finish of 9.9 is more than two positions better than he's ever recorded before.)

So why are we not trumpeting Junior as the great green-and-white hope? Why is nobody outside Junior Nation saying this is the year he starts to match his daddy's legacy? Because his daddy never had to race against anyone like Jimmie Johnson, that's why. (Heresy!) Plus, Junior doesn't have his father's skill and temperament, which is not an insult; think about how many other drivers have tried and fallen short of the Intimidator's legacy.

What Earnhardt does have is a team that's absolutely clicking right now, a team that's taken all the jabs at crew chief and pit crew skill and overwhelmingly refuted all of them. Earnhardt is feeling confident behind the wheel, his team has faith in his abilities, and everything's lining up just right for him to reassert himself as a consistent Chase driver, if not necessarily a championship one.

His best Chase track: Martinsville, at which he's got an average finish of 12.6 but no wins, or Talladega, where he averages about a 15th-place finish but has five wins? Pick 'em. Either way, his strong history at tracks that give other drivers fits bodes well for Little E.

His worst Chase track: He's got an average finish of 23.1 at Homestead, but given that most drivers are out of the hunt by then, that's a deceivingly low stat. Instead, look to Charlotte, where he has an average finish of 18.8 as a more reliable (if problematic) indicator of where he'll run at Chase tracks.

JB's take: You need wins to take the Chase (Carl Edwards in '11 is very narrowly an exception that proves the rule), and Junior hasn't shown he's capable of winning very much yet. If he takes an early race or two, the whole picture changes, but as it is, he's not the kind of driver who can rack up bunches of victories. He'll stay in the picture until November, but he won't be a championship factor.

2012 Chase Prospects: Tony Stewart goes for title number four

The battle between Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards will be the standard on which all Sprint Cup championship battles will be judged from here on out. And if that's not enough by itself, Stewart's five Chase wins, the most by any Championship winning driver, is also a new benchmark.

And Stewart has another benchmark too. In his first Chase win in 2005, he won the title without winning a single Chase race -- the only driver to do that too. (Note: that's probably why he was so dismissive of any questions about a specific Chase-winning formula on Friday.)

What does this mean? Well it means that Stewart will win 10 races when he wins his third Chase, but that won't happen until 2017. So sorry Tony, you'll have to wait a while.

Honestly, Stewart winning the Chase this year may be as much of a surprise as it was last year. After starting off strongly with wins at Las Vegas and Fontana, Stewart, who (obligatory comment about how awesome he usually is in the summer), has finished outside the top 10 in six of the last 10 races leading up to the Chase. Yeah, he does have one win in that stretch (Daytona), but last year heading into the Chase, he had five top 10s in the final 10 regular season races.

Best Chase Track: That's Chicago, site of tomorrow's Geico 400. Stewart has three wins and 9 top 10s in 11 starts there. Pretty good.

Worst Chase Track: By average finish, it's Talladega, but doesn't it seem that Talladega is low on the list for everyon? It's that whole lottery thing. Stewart's second worst average finish at a Chase track is at Charlotte, where he has one win and 12 top 10s in 27 starts.

NB's Prediction: 4th. Stewart gets the benefit of the doubt here because of his performance last year. This is the ultimate in toss-up scenarios for Smoke. Given last year, it's not surprising if he's in the battle for the title until the final race. Given the last 10 races, it's equally not as surprising if he's not.

Spy Shots: 2014 Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series Reveals its Front End

The upcoming 2014 Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series has been caught testing several times, but these latest spy shots have finally provided us with an undisguised view of the vehicle’s front end. These images also show off the big fixed wing that has been placed at the back of this prototype.

The SLS Black Series will be distinguished by the usual elements seen on all Black Series models. These include a new front apron with larger air intakes, two openings in the bonnet for better engine cooling, a new AMG sports exhaust system, and of course, new AMG light-alloy wheels.

The SLS AMG Black Series will be powered by a 6.2 liter naturally aspirated V8 engine that will deliver an extra 50 HP over the standard SLS AMG, meaning it will have a total of about 620 HP. With the extra power, the Black Series will most likely go from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds.

Expect to see the debut of the new Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series sometime in 2013.
