Danica Patrick to compete in Tony Stewart?s Prelude to the Dream

Danica Patrick is jumping into a dirt car for charity.

Patrick has signed up to compete in the Prelude to the Dream charity race put on by her NASCAR Sprint Cup Series owner (and teammate) Tony Stewart on Wednesday, June 8th at Eldora Speedway.

Stewart owns the dirt track and the Prelude regularly features NASCAR and other major series stars with all of the proceeds going to charity. After racing in a team format for children's hospitals, this year's Prelude is the Feed the Children Prelude to the Dream, with all proceeds benefiting FeedTheChildren.org.

According to Patrick, this will be the first time she's raced on dirt since she was 10 years old.

"I raced on dirt once before in a go-kart when I was young, but that's about it. It's going to be a challenge for sure, but I know Tony has offered to help in any way possible. I'm excited about it, but I'm also nervous," Patrick said in a release. "It's a totally different style of racing, so I'm not sure what to expect. But it's for a great cause with Feed the Children benefiting from the money raised this year, so I'm ready to give it a shot."

Clint Bowyer, who won last year's race, will be joining Patrick and Stewart and 15 other announced drivers, including Justin Allgaier, Aric Almirola, Dave Blaney, Kurt Busch, Ron Capps, Ty Dillon, Bill Elliott, Ray Evernham, David Gilliland, Jimmie Johnson, Tony Kanaan, Bobby Labonte, Ryan Newman, Cruz Pedregon and Kenny Wallace. Six more drivers will be announced next week.

The Prelude to the Dream will once again be televised via HBO Pay-Per-View.

NASCAR trucks driver nabbed in sex sting

Mario Gosselin, who most recently drove for NASCAR in the Camping World Truck Series, has been arrested in a Polk County, Fla. sex sting.

Conducted by the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the sting offered up online advertisements for sex, and Gosselin was among more than 40 individuals who responded to the ads. Those netted in the sting were arrested when they met with undercover detectives.

Gosselin last raced in the Truck Series in 2010, when he competed in 25 races. He gained a bit of notoriety in the Nashville race; wrecked by the lapped truck of Joe Aramendia, Gosselin went to pit road and tried to hit Aramendia's car with a brake hose. Alas, he missed.

Gosselin ran in the Sprint Cup series in 2004, racing at Martinsville and Darlington. At Martinsville, suspension problems ended his day early, while at Darlington, he was flagged for being too slow after just 14 laps.

He is free on $250 bond.

We're only five races into the season, but there's a saying: "Get to five, Chase hopes alive." OK, we just made that up, but it COULD be a saying. Anyway, the top 10 is stuffed with drivers who haven't been there lately, and quite a few well-known names ? Presenting the 2012 Fireball Cup, recognizing excellence in NASCAR fighting

Look, let's be honest. We all like NASCAR rivalries here. But even though this is a sport that tracks every single segment of every single lap of every single driver, there is as yet no comprehensive method for tracking the many disputes that occur every week.

Until now. With a deep bow in the direction of our pals at Every Day Should Be Saturday and their Fulmer Cup, we proudly present the 2012 debut of The Fireball Cup, recognizing excellence in NASCAR brawling. (We did a soft launch of this last year, but this is the kind of thing you need to start early in the season.)

Here's how it works. Every week, we'll award points based on participation in fights or rivalries across all series, breaking down in the following way:

? Verbal/Twitter exchange: 1 point
? Bumping cars in an aggressive, making-a-point fashion: 2 points
? Spin, non-critical: 3 points
? Spin, critical: 4 points
? Out of car, punches thrown: 5 points

So far this year, no driver has amassed more than one nomination. (Step it up, guys!) And we will always err on the side of assuming everything is aggressive. Points are cumulative; you can pile up multiple points for a single incident. As a result, we have a surprise leader:

Jeff Gordon, 3 points (see below)
Dale Earnhardt Jr., 2 points (bumping Mark Martin at Vegas)
Matt Kenseth, 1 point (upset at Carl Edwards after Vegas)
Joey Logano, 1 point (angry with Kurt Busch at Daytona/Nationwide)
Ryan Newman, 1 point (hints at retaliation on Edwards after Phoenix)
Danica Patrick, 1 point (rages at Cole Whitt at Daytona/Nationwide)
David Ragan, 1 point (rages at Elliott Sadler at Daytona)

Gordon at Vegas is our first multi-point leader, first for hammering his car into Logano (2 points) and second for his over-the-air shot ("There's going to be a caution soon if this dumb [censored] doesn't get out of the way," 1 point).

So there you have it. Feel free to send in your nominations after each race, and if you have a write-in vote (like somebody going crazy at your local dirt track), hey, let us know that too!

We'll total up the figures and award a Fireball Cup to our brawling champion at the end of the season. Any guesses who it'll be?

(One note: We need a trophy. So if you have Photoshop skills, or craftmaking skills, write us at jay.busbee@yahoo.com with your submission. We'll be sure that the winning driver sees this at the end of the year. You'll be famous!)

1966 Ferrari 206 SP Dino Replica: Real Enough for My Dollar

1966 Ferrari 206 SP Dino Replica

The 1966 Ferrari 206 SP Dino is one of the rarest cars in the world, as Ferrari only built a total of 18 of these sweet machines. Well, the rarer the car, the more likely enthusiasts are to start replicating them, so seeing a replica of this famous car is to be expected. However, a high-quality replica is much less common.

A recent beauty popped up on eBay and it is likely one of the best recreations of a classic Ferrari we have ever seen. This replica 1966 Ferrari 206 SP Dino is about as close to 100% perfect as you can get. It has a custom-built alloy body with a 1,987 cc V-6 engine from a Ferrari Dino 206 GT. It may not crank out the 215 horsepower that the 206 SP?s 1,999 cc engine cranked, but the Dino 206 GT?s engine was rated at a respectable 176 horsepower (1967 model year). Driving this mid-mounted engine?s power to the rear wheels is a magnesium gearbox, which is likely a five-speed configuration.

Being the party poopers that we are, we had to examine this replica closely and see what differences we could find between it and the original. The first thing that stands out is the parked positioning of the wiper blade. The replica?s wiper blade is parked on the driver?s side of the vehicle. On the original, the wiper blade parks almost in the middle of the windshield.

The second thing is that the cutout in front of the windshield is several inches too close to the windshield. The original 206 SP Dino?s cutout is at least 8 inches from the windshield and the replica?s cutout is about 3 inches from the windshield.

Lastly, the driver?s side window frame on the original is unpainted, whereas the replica?s is painted red. All of that said, for a starting bid of ?only? $89,100, this is not a bad deal, given an original 206 SP Dino fetched $3,267,000 at an auction in 2007.

1966 Ferrari 206 SP Dino Replica: Real Enough for My Dollar originally appeared on topspeed.com on Thursday, 29 March 2012 20:00 EST.

Kyle Petty is not a fan of the NASCAR appeals process

On Tuesday, the NASCAR appeals panel will hear thecase from Hendrick Motorsports about the 25-point penalty levied against Jimmie Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus for issues with the C-posts on the No. 48 before Daytona 500 practice.

If upheld, Knaus and car chief Ron Malec will each be suspended for six races and Knaus will be fined $100,000. The suspensions would take place before Sunday's race at Bristol ? the two have worked at Phoenix and Las Vegas while waiting for the appeal to be heard.

NASCAR says that in 145 appeals heard since 1999, 101 penalties have been upheld, 31 were reduced, 11 have been overturned and, believe it or not, two have been increased. The last driver in the Sprint Cup Series to have a points penalty rescinded was Robby Gordon in 2008. And in that case, the monetary fine was actually increased from $100,000 to $150,000.

To say that former driver and current SPEED analyst Kyle Petty feels the appeals process isn't fair may be an understatement.

"You want to talk about a crapshoot," Petty said Sunday on SPEED, "This appeals process is a crapshoot. There are 45 members on this board. If you go the NASCAR rule book, you'll see these people's names. Some of them may have passed away since their names were put in here. That's how old these people are. These people shouldn't be judging Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus and some of this stuff. I challenge anybody out there to find me more than eight or 10 out of this 45 who have been to the race track in the last 12 to 24 months.

"These people don't go to the race track, they don't understand the process. They don't understand sometimes where this sport is.They're great business people. They're past drivers, champions, past sports car racers, past engine builders. Doesn't make any difference.I think they should be judged by their peers. In this environment, in this environment we race in today, if you commit a crime or you do something, you should be judged by people who understand the sport and what is going on. And I don't think the appeals process is a good process, but at the same time, I don't think the fine or what they've done to Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus is anywhere near legit. It's total BS. They never should have fined them because the car never made it onto the race track."

To note, the Michael Waltrip Racing teams of Martin Truex Jr. and David Reutimann and the JTG Daugherty team of Bobby Labonte were all docked 25 points for unapproved windshields at Talladega last fall. Those windshields were never on track. The teams' crew chiefs were also suspended for the final four races of the season.

"How can [the appeals panel] override it? They don't even understand the sport ? look at the names on this list. The 'Room of Doom,' the way these templates fit and everything that goes on [in inspection] ? it's a complicated process. I'm not even sure I could judge Chad on it because I don't go down there and watch them put those templates on that car.I don't know what the sport is sometimes and how it changes. I think [Mike] Helton is a better judge of it. I think [John] Darby is a better judge of it. I think Robin [Pemberton] is a better judge of it because they're right in there, but to take [the appeals hearing] out of this context and take it somewhere else, I don't appreciate that.I don't like it."

While the Hendrick camp feels ? publicly, anyway ? that they have a good chance at a winning appeal, the chances of the No. 48's appeal resulting in an overturned penalty are less than 10 percent according to the statistics above.

If Johnson's points penalty is overturned and he gets the 25 points back, he would immediately be 13th in the standings with 86 points. Johnson is currently 24th.

Hunger Games, NASCAR style: Whom do the odds favor?

So you've probably heard about a little flick opening Friday entitled "The Hunger Games." For those of you not familiar, it's based on a popular young-adult book where a bunch of kids murder each other. It's wonderful, wholesome entertainment!

Anyway, the basic plotline is this: it's the future, and 24 teenagers get dumped into a wasteland and have to kill to survive. The winner gets a whole bunch of food and other swag for his or her home district (hence, the "hunger" part of these games).

So we figured, what would happen if we played a little NASCAR Hunger Games? Say we dump 24 drivers in a forbidding wasteland, like Turn 3 in the Daytona infield, and see who survives the longest. Let's run down a few of our choices:

Tony Stewart: Any time the word "hunger" is mentioned, Stewart's name is at the top of the list. We know he could take out pretty much anybody else, but could he survive in the wilderness?

Carl Edwards: Probably the odds-on favorite, and for that reason, Mr. SWAT-team building-jumper would be the very first target.

Danica Patrick: A favorite of the announcers, and she'd probably be gone before the end of the opening credits.

Jimmie Johnson: How would he fare on his own without Chad Knaus to guide him through the wilderness?

Kevin Harvick: A dark horse, you could absolutely see him laying in wait until the field is thinned, then pouncing for the victory.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.: If he wins this one, every other loss becomes moot.

Joey Logano and Trevor Bayne: Bringing in the 'tween vote, but keep the kids away from their inevitable and early demise.

Kasey Kahne: Somehow he'd manage to shoot himself with his own bow and arrow.

Kurt Busch: You'd hear him from a mile away yelling at the skies to provide him with more ammo.

All right, so here are your contestants. We'll do three rounds of this: winnowing the field to 12 for Saturday and a final four for Sunday. Make your case for the winner in the comments below.

1.Dale Earnhardt Jr.
2.Danica Patrick
3.Kyle Busch
4.Jimmie Johnson
5.Carl Edwards
6.Jeff Gordon
7.Tony Stewart
8.Kevin Harvick
9.Matt Kenseth
10.Clint Bowyer
11.Denny Hamlin
12.Kasey Kahne
13.Greg Biffle
14.Jeff Burton
15.Joey Logano
16.Ryan Newman
17.Martin Truex Jr.
18.Brad Keselowski
19.Kurt Busch
20.Juan Pablo Montoya
21.Bobby Labonte
22.Mark Martin
23.Trevor Bayne
24.Jamie McMurray

Wreck of the week, featuring Kasey Kahne taking out everybody

Not much doubt about what the wreck of the week was this week, huh? Kasey Kahne caught Regan Smith by thiiiiis much, but in a place like Bristol, that's enough to cause multi-car carnage. Now, pretty much everybody involved in the accident got back out on the track, and Kevin Harvick even managed to stay on the lead lap. Still, this had a dramatic impact on the race, taking out at least four potential winners (Harvick, Kahne, Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards) and putting Kahne in a must-run-well situation for the next few months.

For that reason, we give this wreck ... THREE Crazed Montoyas!

Gresini Announces Indonesian Federal Oil To Sponsor Gino Rea In Moto2

In a further sign that motorcycle racing teams are looking east to make up for the sponsorship they have lost in the west, the Gresini Racing Moto2 team today announced that Indonesian oil company Federal Oil is to back Gino Rea, one of Gresini's two Moto2 riders, in the Moto2 class. The news had already slipped out in the Gresini press release announcing Rea as their second rider, alongside Ratthapark Wilairot, but now the news has been announced officially.

Federal oil joins a growing list of Asian sponsors in MotoGP. Though Yamaha lost Malaysian petroleum giant Petronas, they gained Japanese oil company ENEOS; both Yamaha and Honda receive backing from their Indonesian distribution network; Rea's teammate is backed by Thai Honda; and in Moto3, Malaysian budget airline AirAsia is backing Zulfahmi Khairuddin in the Ajo team, joining Danny Kent, Sandro Cortese and Arthur Sissis, though they are supported by Red Bull.

Below is the official press release from Gresini:

Scott Jones Introduces Limited Edition Signed Prints Of Kenny Roberts At The Indy Mile

One of my most abiding motorcycle racing memories comes from my first trip to Indianapolis for the 2009 MotoGP race. On the Saturday night, I joined the majority of the paddock in making the pilgrimage to the Indiana State Fairground for the Indy Mile flat track races, the first time I had ever visited a flat track race. In addition to the overwhelming visceral experience of having a couple of dozen thundering twins roar by at over a hundred miles an hour, rear wheel sideways and looking for grip, came something very special indeed. Kenny Roberts Senior, three-times world champion took his Yamaha TZ750-powered flat tracker, one of the most legendary motorcycles ever to grace a racetrack - though Roberts would probably reject the verb "grace" - out for a spin, 34 years after it made its debut at the State Fairground.

Drivers react to John Middlebrook?s decision to overturn Jimmie Johnson?s points penalty

Whenever Mike Helton has a press conference it's a big deal. So naturally, the main topic of Friday's press conferences at Auto Club Speedway was NASCAR chief appellate officer John Middlebrook's decision to reduce the penalties against Jimmie Johnson on Tuesday.

Here's what some of the drivers at Auto Club had to say about the decision to overturn the points penalty for Johnson and suspensions for crew chief Chad Knaus and car chief Ron Malec, including Johnson's reaction to the appeal.

"The points back, that's huge," Johnson said. "We've had a great couple races here and been able to climb up in the points and get near the top 10,. Getting 25 points back puts us right there, I guess, a point out (of tenth place) and we all know how important points are."

"The disruption, if we were to lose Chad and Ron, would have been huge for our team, for any team. Although we have a lot of depth and felt that we'd survive, you don't want to go to the racetrack without your crew chief and car chief."

Kevin Harvick compared the results of the decision to the OJ Simpson verdict. And well, if there was ever a time to make an OJ Simpson verdict reference, this might have been it given the proximity of Fontana to where the trial took place.

"I think (the appeals process) is fine," Harvick said. "It's a platform for everybody to state your case, and sometimes you win and sometimes you lose just like in the court of law. It's really no different than that. It's no different than watching a case like OJ, and watching OJ go free. Watching that case, there's no way you thought that was going to happen. Then you see the verdict, and then it happens. It's very similar to that. Sometimes you think something is cut and dry, and you think this is going to be the verdict, and the next thing you know it's not. You move on and you go to the next one. But there is a platform for the teams to present their cases to a board, and obviously to the last step they took this time to present it again. I've been involved in it before from the team ownership side, and you prepare no different than you would going to a court case. It's literally the exact same process."

"Honestly I didn't even know about it on Tuesday. They had to call me and tell me because I have learned over the years to not pay attention to anybody but ourselves. I wasn't surprised, because nothing in this sport surprises me anymore."

Dale Earnhardt Jr., Johnson's Hendrick Motorsports teammate, supported the process.

"I thought it was interesting," Junior said. "As an individual in the sport it makes me feel good that NASCAR has such a good appeal process that both sides have the ability to get a fair shake. It's nice to know that, that is out there and that it is working as designed."

Somewhat surprisingly, Brad Keselowski didn't have a take on the matter.

"As far as how the whole process works, I don't really know and haven't put a lot of effort into understanding it," Keselowski said. "I'm sure there are a lot of different opinions and I'm never short of an opinion. With this particular one, I just don't find it interesting and don't have an opinion on it. I didn't join the sport to be a race car drive and argue court cases. I want to go fast, turn left and win races. Things of that nature haven't really excited me.

"I just don't think that it's very interesting. I think the focus should be on what's going on at the race track. Teammates cutting each other's tires down, that to me is interesting. I don't follow court cases in racing."

Rolls Royce Phantom Hearse: Now That's Making a Statement

Rolls-Royce Hearse

My parents always told me that there are only two things that are certain in life: death and taxes. Well, at least you can handle the former in style. Yeah, sure, there are Mercedes and Cadillac hearses available, but nothing says ?style? quite like cruising to your final resting place in a modified circa-$400,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom.

Well, this ultra-luxurious death-mobile is due to become a reality, as Biemme Special Cars did the unthinkable and strapped a hearse backside to this pricey machine. The Phantom B12, which Biemme dubbed it, will make its debut at the 2012 Tanexpo Funeral and Cemetery Trade Show, which is like the New York Auto Show for undertakers. No, not the Undertaker you once saw pseudo-fighting people in a ring, the real undertakers that take care of deceased people.

With the exception of the decked out coffin area in the rear, its massive 23-foot length and a self-leveling air-ride suspension, the Phantom is the same as one you may see in a dealership. It features a 460-horsepower, 6.5-liter V-12 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission, which assures that you?ll never live up to the ?late to your own funeral? expression.

This beast is rumored to cost somewhere in the vicinity of $660,000, so it?s doubtful that you?re going to see it at your local funeral parlor any time soon, unless you live in Beverly Hills of course. Regardless, if you want to go out in style, there is nothing quite like one final ride in one of the most luxurious cars available today. Now, if there was just a cool way to handle taxes, life would be perfect.
