Lewis Hamilton enters wrong pit stall in Malaysia

Lewis Hamilton showed that old habits can be hard to break for some of the best drivers in the world.

Hamilton is in his first season (and second race of the year) driving for his new team Mercedes after spending his entire career with McLaren Mercedes. So when he entered the pits for his first stop of the day in Sunday's race at Malaysia, Hamilton saw the McLaren crew at the ready and pulled right on in. Oops. (Video at the 33 second mark above.)

Sebastian Vettel won the race in a fun display of F1 team orders. He passed teammate Mark Webber for second after he was told not to push the pace as the two were going 1-2. Hamilton finished third after Mercedes boss Ross Brawn told his teammate Nico Rosberg to keep a gap back to fourth.

Power Rankings: Wait, is it still 2012?

A new year means a new set of Power Rankings! After every race, we'll opine about who we think is at the top of the Sprint Cup heap and how and why they got there. Remember, this isn't scientific, as our formula is the perfect blend of analytics and bias against your favorite driver. So let's get on with it, shall we?

1. Brad Keselowski (LW: 3): The champ is off to the finest start he's ever had in his career, but I'm sure you've heard that already. What vaults him to the top spot is not only that, but the fact that the Sprint Cup Series heads to Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend, a track that Brad isn't too shabby at. By the way, with the announcement that Prevost motorcoaches are the "official luxury motorcoach" of NASCAR now, does that mean Keselowski has to give up his decidedly un-Prevost motorcoach?

2. Jimmie Johnson (LW: 1): Vader can't get no respect. The guy finishes sixth and is atop the points standings and falls out of the top spot in power rankings. Come on, you're so biased against Jimmie Johnson. 1. I was actually accused of being the opposite during Sunday's race chat and 2. I'm just going with what my proprietary formula says.

3. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (LW: 2): To be in the top three of Power Rankings, you need to either be having the best start of your career or be Jimmie Johnson. I don't think Dale Earnhardt Jr. is Jimmie Johnson, so congratulations, Junior! Though what if Dale Earnhardt Jr. was Jimmie Johnson? If you thought the NASCAR fanbase was warped already, the potential cluster that would bring would be incredible.

4. Matt Kenseth (LW: 8): To the victor goes the spoils, the birthday cake, the AARP registration card from Jeff Gordon's car, a discount at Dollar General and probably free shipping on M&Ms or something. Kenseth's win did poke holes in the "driver driving the race sponsor's car wins" theory, as he's sponsored by Husky Tools. And yeah, it's a circumstance unique to racing, but it is kind of funny that a week after the race sponsor's car wins, the race sponsor's rival brand wins.

5. Carl Edwards (LW: 5): Fifth goes to the fifth place driver from Las Vegas who also happened to be in fifth last week. Daytona sure seems longer than two weeks ago, doesn't it?

6. Kasey Kahne (LW: NR): Congratulations on your first Power Rankings appearance of the season, Mr. Kahne. I have a feeling you'll be here a while. We know how good Kahne has been throughout his career at intermediate tracks. He led a race-high 114 laps on Sunday. You want to draw conclusions? Well, start putting him at the top of the Chase standings at the end of the year.

7. Denny Hamlin (LW: 4): This is where it really starts to get messy. You can make a case for about 15 different drivers over the next six spots, and Hamlin gets to be fifth simply because he was in the top four last week and led some laps on Sunday. Yeah, yeah, that was because of pit strategy and he got a speeding penalty that killed his chances for a win. But that pit strategy did contribute significantly to the 2,400 green flag passes during Sunday's race.

8. Mark Martin (LW: 7): At one point in the second half of Sunday's race, there was a reference to Martin moving towards the front. What? Martin moving towards the front in the second half of a Cup race in his MWR tenure? *Checks box score* Oh, he finished 14th. Carry on.

9. Aric Almirola (LW: 9): Once again, we say that if the season ended today, Almirola would make the Chase. Seriously though, this is a nice start for the 43. He hasn't finished in the top 10 (yet) but his finish of 16th on Sunday was the lowest of the season. If he keeps those mid-teens finishes going, he's going to be on of the guys on the periphery of the top 12 through the summer.

10. Clint Bowyer: (LW: 6): I don't think they're going to put Clint's freefall through the field as something you can do with the help of 5 Hour Energy in one of those commercials. Though while Bowyer won't agree with us, that freefall was infinitely more tolerable than than debut album guy.

11. Kyle Busch (LW: NR): Busch would be considerably higher if he didn't have the pre-race engine change (and two subsequent wall-slaps) at Phoenix that forced him to the back of the field. But JGR engines will be JGR engines and bygones will be bygones so here we are.

12. Greg Biffle (LW: 10): Was Biffle in Sunday's race? Yes. Was his car gray? I think so. Was it a very nondescript day? Definitely.

Dropped Out: AJ Allmendinger, Casey Mears

Lucky Dog: Tony Stewart, who got the Lucky Dog en route to salvaging an 11th place finish.

The Ryan Newman DNF: Front Row made it through the entire race without a crash! So until further notice, our DNF is named for Ryan Newman who blew a motor a week after blowing two right front tires.

Video: 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 testing at the Nürburgring

Back in 2011, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 posted a 7:14.27 lap time at the N�rburgring. The ZL1 is powered by a 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 engine that delivers a total of 550 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque. Since then, Chevrolet has unveiled the Camaro Z/28, which is not as powerful as the ZL1, but it is significantly lighter and three seconds faster around Chevy?s testing track.

The question coming to our minds is whether the new Z/28 is also faster around N�rburgring? In the above video you can see that Chevy obviously had the same question, as the Z/28 was caught lapping the famed track. What we do not understand is why Chevrolet had the Z/28 so heavily camouflaged while testing it, considering we have already seen it.

Luckily for us, Youtube user "Nurburgdale" was also at the ring and managed to shot a very nice video of the new Z/28 lapping the ’Ring.

Next Mercedes C-Class to get Diesel and Hybrid Powertrains

If you want to buy a German mid-sized sedan, you have three choices: Audi A4, BMW 3 Series or Mercedes C-Class. Still, the C-Class has lost lots of ground in the past few years and it was about time for Mercedes to do something about it.

The next-generation Mercedes C-Class has been caught testing in many times, but until now we had no details on the engines to be featured in the new model. However, in a recent interview Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Steve Cannon revealed that the next C-Class will be offered with a series of firsts: the first diesel and hybrid powertrains, first time with an all-wheel-drive system will and the first time the next C-Class will have an engine built in the United States: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder developed in cooperation with Nissan.

Also, next to the current sedan and coupe variants, the next C-Class will also add a convertible and station wagon versions. All these changes were required to make the C-Class more competitive with the BMW 3 Series.

Mercedes will unveil the next-generation C-Class at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show; the coupe and convertible will arrive in 2015. The hybrid version will also arrive in 2015.

New season, new Happy Hour! You know the drill. I am losing my noodle dealing with FOX! They have a commercial every 9-10 laps @ Bristol...that's 3 minutes under green and 6 minutes of commercials! Every time we go to commercial something happens! FOX HAS TO GO! I mean they could go side by side...but they don't even do that! Between the supreme downforce Gen6 car and the commercial deal along with NAZICAR telling the drivers they cant speak without"Pappas Please"... Because of the all the downforce a week car with NO TIRES can hold off a strong car with 4???? IS THAT RIGHT? No longer does the fastest car win!?! I AM DONE WITH THIS bull excrement!

Fox had a terrible race last Sunday from a caution standpoint. They could not time the cautions right at all. I really, really don't think that they want to be in commercial every time a caution happens. They did come out of commercial, I believe, for the Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth incident -- I distinctly remember coming out of commercial straight into a shot of Gordon's damaged racecar.

From CawsNJaws, the race broadcast time was the same as it was last year at 138, while commercial time increased *WELCOME BACK TO THE AT&T HAPPY HOUR PIT REPORT* from 50 minutes in 2012 to 53 minutes on Sunday. So that's just three minutes.

I love that Fox is trying side-by-side in the first commercial break of the race every time, but it seems completely unnecessary if it's also during a caution flag. I wish we could restructure that contract to have side-by-side be the first green flag commercial break of the race. It'd be a nice start.

Four races into the 2013 season, I am seeing a trend. Passing has been no easy task at Daytona, Phoenix, Las Vegas, or Bristol. Nascar way over-hyped this new car. (Am I going to be fined for this comment?) That being said, I am not disappointed with any of the racing I've seen, with the exception of the parade at Daytona, or with the Gen-6.

Bristol was my favorite race so far. I was fascinated watching the leaders struggle to drive around the slower cars of David Stremme, Danica Patrick, David Ragan, etc. But for some reason, I can't find anyone who agrees with me.

ps. How about the performances of Kurt Busch, Brian Vickers, and Jamie Mcmurray? Each of these guys was a lap or more down at one point, but bounced back for a top-ten finish. And How about AJ's 13th place finish in the #51?

I thought Bristol was the most compelling race of the Sprint Cup Series season so far, just edging out Daytona. And I'm also not sure how much the new car had to do with it. If you recall, the summer race at Bristol was pretty damn fun last year. Though I've thought that about all of the Bristol races since the repave. The grinding of the top groove has made the bottom a little more effective so far, however, and I'd be totally cool with races like we saw Sunday every time we go to Bristol.

I did some research after watching the great race that was put on at Bristol Sunday.

In 1983 10 out of the 31 races were run on tracks that were under 1 mile. That number shrank to 8 out of 29 by 1993. That number shrank even further to 6 of 36 by 2003 and we still sit at that number in 2013. In the last 30 years the percentage of short tracks on the NASCAR schedule have been cut in half.

My first thought was that seating capacity would have to be an issue as these tracks are smaller. Then I looked up tracks by overall capacity. With 160,000 seats Bristol sits 4th on the list with just 7,000 less seats than Daytona. Richmond at 112,000 seats sits 11th. That's more seats than Kentucky, Kansas, Chicago, and Homestead tracks that have been built and added to the schedule since 1993.

The racing is better and they can get just as many people in the stands as the "big" tracks. I just can't understand how ISC/SMI in their expansion of the sport in the 90's and 2000's didn't build 1 short track to replace the dozens they shut down in that same time period.

Stocking up on "No Doz" for Sunday's race at Auto Club

It's hard to argue against more short track racing, especially in this current car and tire combination. The new car is designed with intermediate tracks in mind, but no matter what the racing at intermediate tracks looks like, NASCAR should always have a nice balance of short tracks on the schedule.

What about a 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 approach? With the four plate races and two road course races, that gives you six races for the Dovers and New Hampshires of the world. Then you get 12 intermediate track races and 12 races at tracks under a mile. Sound good?

NASCAR regained control of its digital rights from Turner Sports beginning this season. However, it should be embarrassed about the problems on its digital platforms. Among the problems are technical issues with the comment sections on its Website for several weeks and many RaceView users not able to access the application. Fans are frustrated and NASCAR officials have yet to publically address the problems. Maybe NASCAR should be less time fining drivers for benign comments about the Gen6 cars and more time making sure its digital platforms are functioning. Thoughts?

First off, I love the relationship that we at Yahoo! Sports have had with Turner and now NASCAR in my tenure. The ability to have licensed video of most everything during a race broadcast is an awesome thing and I feel enhances the reader experience.

However, I do feel the fans' pain with the transition to the NASCAR-controlled NASCAR.com. Heck, I've experienced it along with you when trying to find information myself or follow along with the race via the scanner or other features.

I think there is great potential with NASCAR's digital offerings, and with a new website, there's always going to be some growing pains. However, it's unfortunate that the many new features of the site have basically been inoperable at times and I hope that those of you who paid for the features are compensated fairly one way or another.

As the Cup Series heads to its first off weekend, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is in the points lead

If you ever wondered if you'll ever see the day when Dale Earnhardt Jr. taking the points lead would be an afterthought, Sunday was it.

Lost amidst the contact between Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin and the scuffle between Logano and Stewart, Junior drove past the crash to finish second, and thanks to the relative struggles of Jimmie Johnson and Brad Keselowski, takes a 12 point lead atop the standings into the Easter off weekend.

After working his way up into the top 10 in the second half of Sunday's race, Junior's march towards the front stalled out. But when Clint Bowyer's engine expired with 16 laps to go, Junior and crew chief Steve Letarte made the decision to pit. But the entire field didn't make that same move. The top six stayed out. Those closest to the cars with fresh tires were easy targets, and over those last 11 laps, Junior was able to dice his way through the field.

"I'm not sure exactly?? when we would take two tires, our car drove really bad. It just didn't like that old left rear on there, and it would?? we'd just get really, really loose," Earnhardt Jr. said. "So that was giving me some problems. And we were fading there at the end of the race, but we got an opportunity to fix it when we got that late caution.

"But yeah, we just stick together. We got, we were pretty good at closing races, something I never really was good at for years, and now we're doing it as good as anybody. Just riding the wave; just real happy with how things are going for our team."

It's the most consistent start of Junior's career. In 2004, he won two of the first five races, but thanks to a 35th place finish at Las Vegas, was second in the standings after the fifth race. This year, Junior's only led 47 laps (all at Phoenix), but he's netted 77 positions from where he started in five races and has finished 2nd, 5th, 7th, 6th and 2nd. Not bad at all.

Keselowski started at the back of the pack because of an engine change during practice. He quickly made his way through the field, but hit the wall when he and others got in the oil from Timmy Hill's car. That blunted the speed that he had shown and thanks to a late race issue, finished 23rd.

Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus struggled to find the right balance on the No. 48 all day and were mainstays in the back half of the top 20. But like Junior, Johnson also came down pit road on that final caution flag and took advantage of fresh tires to finish 12th. He's in third place, 16 points back.

2013 Aragon World Superbike Race Two Results: Fractured Start Began An Unusual Race

World Superbike race two was reduced to a nineteen lap affair after Jules Cluzel gesticulated on the grid after the warm up lap, bringing out the yellow flags. The start was delayed and Loris Baz also ended up in the pit lane. With the restart, Cluzel was sent to the pits while Baz started from the last spot on the grid.

Fire in Matt Kenseth?s pit stall spreads to his jack man?s shoes

Matt Kenseth's pit stall caught on fire after he left it following a pit stop early in Saturday night's NRA 500 and that fire briefly spread to his gas man John Eicher's shoes as he leaped back across the pit wall.

Pit stall fires sometimes happen when the accelerating rear tires of a car run over a lugnut from an old tire lying in the pit stall. The force from the lugnut getting shot backwards cause sparks, and if those sparks hit any spilled gasoline, a fire quickly ignites. In this case, it happened before Kenseth's crew had a chance to jump back over the wall.
