Wreck of the week, featuring Kasey Kahne taking out everybody
Not much doubt about what the wreck of the week was this week, huh? Kasey Kahne caught Regan Smith by thiiiiis much, but in a place like Bristol, that's enough to cause multi-car carnage. Now, pretty much everybody involved in the accident got back out on the track, and Kevin Harvick even managed to stay on the lead lap. Still, this had a dramatic impact on the race, taking out at least four potential winners (Harvick, Kahne, Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards) and putting Kahne in a must-run-well situation for the next few months.
For that reason, we give this wreck ... THREE Crazed Montoyas!

Gresini Announces Indonesian Federal Oil To Sponsor Gino Rea In Moto2
In a further sign that motorcycle racing teams are looking east to make up for the sponsorship they have lost in the west, the Gresini Racing Moto2 team today announced that Indonesian oil company Federal Oil is to back Gino Rea, one of Gresini's two Moto2 riders, in the Moto2 class. The news had already slipped out in the Gresini press release announcing Rea as their second rider, alongside Ratthapark Wilairot, but now the news has been announced officially.
Federal oil joins a growing list of Asian sponsors in MotoGP. Though Yamaha lost Malaysian petroleum giant Petronas, they gained Japanese oil company ENEOS; both Yamaha and Honda receive backing from their Indonesian distribution network; Rea's teammate is backed by Thai Honda; and in Moto3, Malaysian budget airline AirAsia is backing Zulfahmi Khairuddin in the Ajo team, joining Danny Kent, Sandro Cortese and Arthur Sissis, though they are supported by Red Bull.

One of my most abiding motorcycle racing memories comes from my first trip to Indianapolis for the 2009 MotoGP race. On the Saturday night, I joined the majority of the paddock in making the pilgrimage to the Indiana State Fairground for the Indy Mile flat track races, the first time I had ever visited a flat track race. In addition to the overwhelming visceral experience of having a couple of dozen thundering twins roar by at over a hundred miles an hour, rear wheel sideways and looking for grip, came something very special indeed. Kenny Roberts Senior, three-times world champion took his Yamaha TZ750-powered flat tracker, one of the most legendary motorcycles ever to grace a racetrack - though Roberts would probably reject the verb "grace" - out for a spin, 34 years after it made its debut at the State Fairground.

Drivers react to John Middlebrook?s decision to overturn Jimmie Johnson?s points penalty
Whenever Mike Helton has a press conference it's a big deal. So naturally, the main topic of Friday's press conferences at Auto Club Speedway was NASCAR chief appellate officer John Middlebrook's decision to reduce the penalties against Jimmie Johnson on Tuesday.
Here's what some of the drivers at Auto Club had to say about the decision to overturn the points penalty for Johnson and suspensions for crew chief Chad Knaus and car chief Ron Malec, including Johnson's reaction to the appeal.
"The points back, that's huge," Johnson said. "We've had a great couple races here and been able to climb up in the points and get near the top 10,. Getting 25 points back puts us right there, I guess, a point out (of tenth place) and we all know how important points are."
"The disruption, if we were to lose Chad and Ron, would have been huge for our team, for any team. Although we have a lot of depth and felt that we'd survive, you don't want to go to the racetrack without your crew chief and car chief."
Kevin Harvick compared the results of the decision to the OJ Simpson verdict. And well, if there was ever a time to make an OJ Simpson verdict reference, this might have been it given the proximity of Fontana to where the trial took place.
"I think (the appeals process) is fine," Harvick said. "It's a platform for everybody to state your case, and sometimes you win and sometimes you lose just like in the court of law. It's really no different than that. It's no different than watching a case like OJ, and watching OJ go free. Watching that case, there's no way you thought that was going to happen. Then you see the verdict, and then it happens. It's very similar to that. Sometimes you think something is cut and dry, and you think this is going to be the verdict, and the next thing you know it's not. You move on and you go to the next one. But there is a platform for the teams to present their cases to a board, and obviously to the last step they took this time to present it again. I've been involved in it before from the team ownership side, and you prepare no different than you would going to a court case. It's literally the exact same process."
"Honestly I didn't even know about it on Tuesday. They had to call me and tell me because I have learned over the years to not pay attention to anybody but ourselves. I wasn't surprised, because nothing in this sport surprises me anymore."
Dale Earnhardt Jr., Johnson's Hendrick Motorsports teammate, supported the process.
"I thought it was interesting," Junior said. "As an individual in the sport it makes me feel good that NASCAR has such a good appeal process that both sides have the ability to get a fair shake.� It's nice to know that, that is out there and that it is working as designed."
Somewhat surprisingly, Brad Keselowski didn't have a take on the matter.
"As far as how the whole process works, I don't really know and haven't put a lot of effort into understanding it," Keselowski said. "I'm sure there are a lot of different opinions and I'm never short of an opinion. �With this particular one, I just don't find it interesting and don't have an opinion on it. �I didn't join the sport to be a race car drive and argue court cases. �I want to go fast, turn left and win races. Things of that nature haven't really excited me.
"I just don't think that it's very interesting. �I think the focus should be on what's going on at the race track. �Teammates cutting each other's tires down, that to me is interesting. �I don't follow court cases in racing."

My parents always told me that there are only two things that are certain in life: death and taxes. Well, at least you can handle the former in style. Yeah, sure, there are Mercedes and Cadillac hearses available, but nothing says ?style? quite like cruising to your final resting place in a modified circa-$400,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom.
Well, this ultra-luxurious death-mobile is due to become a reality, as Biemme Special Cars did the unthinkable and strapped a hearse backside to this pricey machine. The Phantom B12, which Biemme dubbed it, will make its debut at the 2012 Tanexpo Funeral and Cemetery Trade Show, which is like the New York Auto Show for undertakers. No, not the Undertaker you once saw pseudo-fighting people in a ring, the real undertakers that take care of deceased people.
With the exception of the decked out coffin area in the rear, its massive 23-foot length and a self-leveling air-ride suspension, the Phantom is the same as one you may see in a dealership. It features a 460-horsepower, 6.5-liter V-12 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission, which assures that you?ll never live up to the ?late to your own funeral? expression.
This beast is rumored to cost somewhere in the vicinity of $660,000, so it?s doubtful that you?re going to see it at your local funeral parlor any time soon, unless you live in Beverly Hills of course. Regardless, if you want to go out in style, there is nothing quite like one final ride in one of the most luxurious cars available today. Now, if there was just a cool way to handle taxes, life would be perfect.

Carl Edwards trains with a Texas SWAT team
This is pretty impressive: Carl Edwards traveled to Texas to train with a local SWAT team, engaging in everything from rappelling to shooting to hostage rescue. (The "hostage" in question was Texas Motor Speedway president Eddie Gossage, and he was rescued unharmed.)
We spoke with Edwards after his escapades, and we'll have a detailed interview and story for you next week. Tidbit: when we talked with Edwards, he was actually in a Texas Subway ... and nobody recognized him. More to come!

Could the new Charger draw some teams to the Dodge camp?
Wishful thinking or harbinger of the future? Multiple voices inside the Dodge camp are insisting that several teams -- that's teams, plural -- have contacted them about running Dodge in 2013 now that Penske Racing has opted to switch to Ford.
Dodge SRT CEO Ralph Gilles and company spokesmen have used some variant of the phrase "phones ringing off the hook" in repeated public comments, starting with Sunday's revelation of the 2013 Dodge Charger. You can see it in the photo above; clearly that's a far cry from the current box that every team runs.
The unveiling was planned before Dodge got the news that it would be a lame-duck manufacturer. Still, the company is pressing forward with plans to remain in NASCAR, perhaps on multiple fronts. "We are going to take our time and come up with a plan that will hopefully see us return to Daytona next year with a new team," Dodge spokesman Dan Reid told the Detroit Free Press.
The question, of course, is which teams could even conceivably make the switch. Hendrick, Roush, Childress and now Penske are all locked in tight with their current manufacturers. Gibbs is a possibility, but Toyota has worked too hard to get into NASCAR to let a marquee team like that go free. It will cost Dodge tremendous money to lure a team away from another manufacturer, but if it were the right team, it could be a sound investment.
Perhaps a combination of smaller and second-tier teams, or battlefield promotions from the Nationwide Series, could serve, but one key will be Penske's performance this year. If Dodge can demonstrate that it can take the team from two Chasers to two legitimate championship contenders, then those phones really will ring off the hook ... or off the table, since nobody's phone sits on a hook anymore.
